Sources: Bill Cowher Is Interested In Chargers (Steelers link)

The New York Post is reporting that the Chargers have spoken with Bill Cowher and that he is reciprocating their interest.

Bill Cowher is – by far – the best coach of the “big three” (him, Fisher, Gruden) for a locker room, for practice and for player-coach interactions.

Yet, Bill Cowher has had barely above-average defenses when he hasn’t had Dom Capers or Dick Lebeau. It’s probable that Cowher – who is also rumored to want to bring his own GM, thus ending A.J. Smith’s tenure with the Chargers – will bring a Lebeau or Capers disciple with him to the Bolts. The GM he might bring is Omar Khan from the Steelers.

With the caveat that you will be paying a lot of money for a guy who is a proven winner but not a proven X’s and O’s guy, I see this as a great deal for everyone.

Norv Turner – who peaked in year 1 with San Diego, winning 2 of his 3 playoff games in 2007, one in 2008, and none in the last three seasons – will still get paid if he sits out. He also would shoot towards the top of offensive coordinator candidates for a litany of teams who are planning on firing their guys. It’s also possible that a team not planning on firing their guy, would fire their guy if Norv would accept their big offer.

A.J. Smith would get a job somewhere, as well.

It’s worth noting that Bill Cowher has a daughter in Los Angeles. Omar Khan’s sister lives there.

I wish him the best,as far away from the AFC north as possible.

A few years ago it was rumored that Cowher wanted a HC/GM position similar to Holmgren and I doubt that has changed. Also according to the New York Post article the chargers have already interviewed Cowher which seems highly unlikely since he's repeatedly steered away from those situations where a coach is already in place.

wish Bill well to, but if it were my team I'd go with coach Fisher.
