So are the Bengals pass rushers, Mike.

I just hope he can keep them off of Ben and Miller might be staying in to block this game as well.

At least we don't have to worry about Gilbert taking out any more O-linemen this week.

I wonder if this is just Gilbert getting some rest for his groin and ankle or if they really want to give Adams playing time before moving him to left tackle next season.

Good luck, Mike! I hope he develops into a great lineman. As bad as people make him out to be, he did rather well when thrown in.

throw him in and let him get some on the job training thats the best way to learn. he need to get up to speed at right tackle before he can move to left tackle. just my op.

I sure hope he can end the drought of our 2012 draft class..I still miss DeCastro not being out there.

Isn't Foster hurt too, though?

I hope Adams can do well against the Bengals, but its definitely going to be a tough one.

Rookie lineman Mike Adams set to make first career start for Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie offensive tackle Mike Adams will make his first career start on Sunday night against the Cincinnati Bengals, replacing the injured right tackle Marcus Gilbert, who himself started 13 games as a rookie last season.

It is critical for Adams to receive playing time. The Steelers drafted him this past April with the intention of him becoming the long-term answer at the left tackle position primarily manned by Max Starks since Marvel Smith became injured in the 2008 season.

Like Gilbert, Adams was a second round draft pick. Unlike Gilbert, however, Adams had the physical pedigree by many estimates of a first round talent. His draft stock took a tumble after testing positive for marijuana at the NFL combine.

Adams took an interesting route to the Pittsburgh Steelers organization. He grew up as a Steeler fan his entire life and desperately wanted to be drafted by the team. When he learned that he had tested positive, he requested a face-to-face meeting with the Steelers brass, something that he did not do with any other team.

In the meeting with team president Art Rooney II, general manager Kevin Colbert, and head coach Mike Tomlin, Adams was informed that he was off the organization’s draft board.

I think this kid will get better in time. Something tells me he has heart.

Well along with his heart he better get some strength and speed.

Last week I saw him getting blowed off the line with an outside rush, as well as getting bulled over a few times. Heart will not make up for that, only hard work, off-season workouts, and in-season dedication.

Everybody gets beaten like that sometimes, including the Joe Thomas' of the world. What I've seen out of Adams in his two extended performances give me comfort. Do I expect him to fuck up a couple plays a game? Yes, I do. But I think he's a good player now that should do fine starting at right tackle for a while (and it sounds like he will, Gilbert could be out 2 months).

Also, an interesting stat from Pro Football Focus, that unfortunately will no longer apply: Marcus Gilbert is the only right tackle to have started every game so far and is yet to allow a sack. However, he did not rank in their top 15 in pass blocking efficiency (total pressures given up vs. total snaps). Meanwhile, Max Starks ranked as the 11th worst, allowing 20 pressures on 212 snaps.

Steelers right tackle Marcus Gilbert could miss up to two months with a right ankle injury suffered during last week’s loss to Tennessee, according to teammate Maurkice Pouncey.

“He’s going to miss a significant amount of time, maybe up to six weeks,” said Pouney, who is dealing with a knee injury that might keep him out of Sunday’s game against Cincinnati. “I don’t think it’s anything that is season-ending, but we’ve got to give him time to heal and get his body right.”

Gilbert, who has been wearing a protective boot on his right foot, flew to Charlotte, N.C., Monday to consult a specialist.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Gilbert has a tendon injury in his ankle that does not require surgery.

Rookie second-round pick Mike Adams will start in place of Gilbert.
