CB Ryan Smith Has Pre-Draft Visit Scheduled With Steelers

BY ALEX KOZORA MARCH 22, 2016

We now know another player the Pittsburgh Steelers intend to bring in for their pre-draft visits. Cornerback Ryan Smith is expected to make a trip to Heinz Field, according to Aaron Wilson over at National Football Post.

Wilson also notes Smith has visits scheduled with Oakland, Minnesota, and Miami.

Smith is a small-school corner from North Carolina Central but stuck out enough to earn a Combine invite. He performed well, running a 4.47, jumping 36 inches in the vert, and 10’2″ in the broad. Only arm length kept Smith off my study in the types of cornerbacks Pittsburgh drafts. Athletically, he hits every mark.

He was a four year starter for the Eagles with 42 in all. In his career, he’s picked off seven passes and broke the school record by averaging 28.1 yards per kick return.

Pittsburgh does not often take FCS level players. They’ve only drafted four since 2000, Kevin Colbert’s first year. But this visit shows obvious interest and yes, one of those four was Cortez Allen, who attended The Citadel.

Smith is the second cornerback and third defensive back to have a scheduled visit. Corner Tavon Young and safety Jayron Kearse are the other two.

There is no specific date for when Smith will be brought in. Every team gets 30 visits, not including local players. As of today, the Steelers sit at four, with OT Jerald Hawkins the other.

The visits I've found are a good way of getting a feeling for who we like. Our pick is always tough to predict since it's BPA and to predict BPA you need to know how the other teams will pick as well as foreseeing draft day trades so it's tough. I think they like Billings and Jackson but I don't know who yet. They're definitely serious about corners though.

Auburn CB Jonathan Jones To Visit Steelers

BY ALEX KOZORA MARCH 23, 2016

In the last two days, we’ve learned of two corners who will be making a trip to Pittsburgh. Yesterday, it was the small school Ryan Smith. We’re on the opposite end of the spectrum today with Auburn’s Jonathan Jones. The news was first reported by Aaron Wilson.

Jones is undersized, weighing in at 5’9/1 186, but ran one of Indianapolis’ fastest 40s with a 4.33. He also showed off his athleticism with a 36 inch vertical, 10’3″ broad, and 4.25 in the short shuttle.

We’ve talked about Jones a ton on here. He drew rave reviews at the Senior Bowl. He’s battle tested against SEC competition and showed his ballhawking skills in 2014, picking off six passes before teams shied away from him last season.

Obviously, Pittsburgh has had little issue drafting and playing small cornerbacks. Senquez Golson was the team’s second round pick, Antwon Blake started for most of the year, and Brandon Boykin was traded for in camp to replace Golson. All three stood under 5’10.

If the team can grab Jones in the third round, they’ll get fantastic value. He is now the third cornerback the team has reportedly decided to bring in for a visit – Smith and Tavon Young are the other two.

For real they should just call our secondary the Lollipop Guild if we grab this kid. He is impressive though.

JONATHAN JONES/CB/AUBURN

5’091″/186 4.33/40 8 3/4″H/30 1/4″A

Remember the old sports adage that “speed kills”. Despite his diminutive size JONES is rising up Draft lists because he has proven that he is probably the fastest CB in this year’s group. He showed well in Mobile at Senior Bowl practices and the game. He’s not afraid to throw himself into the action as evidenced by his 69 tackles during the 2015 season. But clearly his highest value comes from his ability to turn and run with even the fastest of receivers. He is another guy who more than likely has pushed his draft stock into a Friday selection slot.

Blake ran a 4.33 at his combine too. Don't get enamoured by the 40 time. Focus more on his ability to play the position. I'm getting tired of slot CB's. Think we have enough on the roster already.

the Steelers brought him in as one of their official 30 visits:

Pittsburgh Steelers meet with CB Tavon Young at Temple Pro Day

By Jeff.Hartman on Mar 23, 201

Steelers: 30 Official Pre-Draft Visits Allowed Usa-today-8846520.0

The Steelers are looking hard at cornerbacks in the upcoming 2016 NFL Draft, and they visited with a talented cornerback who could be available in the later rounds of the Draft.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have publicly stated they are "tracking" the big named cornerbacks in the upcoming 2016 NFL Draft, and rightfully so. After all, the team needs to solidify one of the weakest positions within the team's lineup. However, don't think they are just taking a look at players like Kendall Fuller, Eli Apple and Mackensie Alexander. No, they are looking at options in the mid-to-late rounds as well.

This is one of the reasons the team sent scouts to watch cornerback Tavon Young at his Temple Pro Day.

Young is a tremendous athlete with great coverage and ball skills. In his time at Temple, where he saw significant playing time since he was a freshman on campus, Young has been a key cog in the Owls' defensive backfield. However, that doesn't mean there aren't reservations with Young being a draft choice for a NFL franchise.

Just as the Steelers second round pick in 2015, Senquez Golson, Young falls South of the cornerback Mendoza height line by standing at 5-feet 9-inches and 183-pounds. Unlike Golson, Young doesn't have the speed, agility and vertical to make up for his lack of height.

Nonetheless, just because Young isn't above 6-feet tall doesn't mean he couldn't be a late round pick for a team desperate for cornerbacks who can play in both man and zone coverage schemes. Young is able to play both coverage schemes, bump coverage and is more than capable in run support. Young is described as "feisty" by NFL scouts, as well as a great leader.

Most project Young to be drafted near the 5th round, and this could be the perfect type of player for the Steelers to double-dip on when it comes to getting a second cornerback in the upcoming draft.

Steelers Schedule Visit With Darian Thompson, Interest In Kamalei Correa

BY ALEX KOZORA MARCH 31, 2016

Tony Pauline, the draft-maestro we look towards during the Pro Day circuit, is dropping knowledge bombs on the Pittsburgh Steelers up at Boise State.

Per Pauline and Walter Football, the Steelers have a future visit scheduled with safety Darian Thompson. Pauline writes he was timed between 4.53 and 4.55, right in line with what I said in the mailbag. His broad and vertical numbers are not known.

Thompson would make the sixth known visit for Pittsburgh and the fifth defensive back.

Pauline gave out two other nuggets of information. The Steelers have reported interest in OLB Kamalei Correa and may look at him with the 25th pick. The team reportedly had dinner with the outside linebacker last night.

He ended with this piece of information about the team’s draft plans.

“The belief from people at Boise State’s pro day is the Steelers will take the best defensive back seven player (safety/cornerback/linebacker) when they are called to the clock in Round 1.”

That could throw a monkey wrench in the idea of taking someone like a Andrew Billings, but the draft is full of different information throughout the process. And as we’ve said before, there is no guarantee Billings falls to 25. The team probably didn’t expect Bud Dupree to drop last year, either.

While the idea of focusing on defense is hardly a surprise, it’s all helping to build a slightly clearer picture of the team’s first round plans. William Jackson III, Mackensie Alexander, and Noah Spence, could all be candidates.

It indeed is a good indication. They're in BPA approach but I believe that the talent gap is so small that they normally would pick players who had visits. It's a good indication for mock draft projection.

2015 picks who had pre-draft visit:
2nd round - Senquez Golson
3rd round - Sammie Coates
4th round - Doran Grant
5th round - Jesse James
Undrafted Rookie signing - Cameron Clear
Undrafted Rookie signing - Tyler Murphy

2014 picks who had pre-draft visit:
1st round - Ryan Shazier
2nd round - Stephon Tuitt
4th round - Montavis Bryant
5th round - Shaquille Richardson
6th round - Jordan Zumwalt
7th round - Rob Blanchflower

2013 picks who had pre-draft visit:
1st round - Jarvis Jones
4th round - Shamarko Thomas
6th round - Vince Williams
6th round - Justin Brown
Undrafted Rookie signing - Nik Embernate

I like Correa as an OLB as well, but didn't think he was valuable to be #25 pick. I guess we will see what Steelers think.

Thompson running a 4.53 on that soft blue turf means he has enough speed to cover. Mayock cites him getting burned deep a few times and not making the last tackle. Not exactly what you want, but everybody gets beat sometime in the secondary. I'm still a Darrian Thompson fan, but definitely think he goes in the 2nd or 3rd round.

I like Correa as well, but would feel much better if they got him in the 4th. It would be a huge let-down if they took him at 25. If they were going to go with a 1st rounder OLB, I'd be thinking of names like Leonard Floyd or Darren Lee ... big, fast guys who have played for top tiered schools. But they aren't going OLB in the 1st round; there's just too much talent elsewhere.

One of the best quotes I've heard regarding the draft process came from Brian Billick during the combine: "Need is a terrible evaluator". I just don't see him as one of the top 64 players in this draft, but maybe the Browns will take him with the #2 pick Steelers: 30 Official Pre-Draft Visits Allowed 1797695198

Correa solidifies status as potential first-round pick at pro day

By Gil Brandt
NFL Media senior analyst
Published: April 1, 2016 at 05:34 p.m

After the 2015 season, Boise State requested a grade for defensive end Kamalei Correa from the NFL Draft Advisory Board. It came back as Round 2. After outstanding combine and pro-day workouts, it looks like the NFLDAB might have missed the mark by one round.

Following up a very good showing last month at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Correa solidified first-round consideration with an exceptional pro day Thursday in Boise, Idaho. He worked out in front of representatives for all 32 NFL teams, including head coach Dan Quinn, GM Thomas Dimitroff and assistant GM Scott Pioli of the Falcons; Colts coach Chuck Pagano; Bengals linebackers coach Jim Haslett; and Seahawks offensive line coach Tom Cable.

Correa (6-foot-2 7/8, 242 pounds), who stood on his 40-yard dash time of 4.69 seconds at the combine, had a vertical jump of 34 inches, a broad jump of 9-foot-9, a 4.18-second short shuttle and a 6.96-second three-cone drill.

Scouts there said he was outstanding in position drills. To me, he's a slower version of Von Miller. That can be dangerous to say, but he's a special pass rusher with that kind of upside.

He'll be a busy man between now and the draft with lots of visits at team facilities, as well as workouts in Boise. On Wednesday, he worked out for the Titans, who own the second pick in Round 2 (No. 33 overall).

Pittsburgh Steelers host Alabama DT A'Shawn Robinson for official pre-draft visit

By Jeff.Hartman on Apr 5, 201

Steelers: 30 Official Pre-Draft Visits Allowed Usa-today-9031119.0

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue their pre-draft visit schedule by hosting A'Shawn Robinson, DT from the University of Alabama.

The gaping hole along the Pittsburgh Steelers defensive line is noticeable even from the laymen's point of view. With Steve McLendon gone via free agency to the New York Jets, the only experienced defensive linemen the Steelers have on their roster are Cameron Heyward, Stephon Tuitt, Daniel McCullers, L.T. Walton and recently signed Ricardo Mathews. That's it.

Because of this, it should come as a shock to no one the team is looking at the upcoming NFL Draft to fill the void along the defensive line. The player they are hosting Tuesday at the team's facility would certainly be a tremendous stop-gap all along the 3-4 defensive front.

A'Shawn Robinson of Alabama is projected to be a first round talent, and most see him being selected prior to the Steelers picking at No. 25, but his talent would be a huge boost to the Steelers defense. Robinson not only can play all three positions in the 3-4 defense, a defense he knows well from his days under Nick Saban with the Crimson Tide, but he can also play the down linemen positions in the Steelers' many sub-packages.

The Steelers will likely bring in many other defensive linemen between now and the Draft, but Robinson was the first at the position to spend time at Steelers' headquarters.

Florida S Keanu Neal Set For Pre-Draft Visit With Steelers

BY DAVE BRYAN APRIL 5, 2016

The Pittsburgh Steelers are certainly interested in drafting a safety this year and on Tuesday we learned that another one will be brought to town for a pre-draft visit.

According to Florida safety Keanu Neal on Twitter, he is headed to Pittsburgh to visit with the Steelers.

Neal, who finished 2015 with 84 tackles, 2 sacks, and an interception, measured in at the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine at 6004, 211-pounds. At his recent pro day, Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert, head coach Mike Tomlin and defensive backs coach Carnell Lake were all in attendance.

Last season, STATS has Neal down as allowing 14 receptions for 137 yards and no touchdowns while in coverage. While he only reportedly played 75% of the defensive snaps last season, he did miss the first two games due to a hamstring injury.

Neal has been linked to the Steelers dating all the way back to the combine.

Neal now makes the fifth safety on our pre-draft visitor list as he joins Jayron Kearse, Darian Thompson, Jeremy Cash and Deon Bush. Cash and Bush were in Pittsburgh last Friday.

While the Steelers did re-sign safety Robert Golden prior to the start of the new league year, veteran free agent safety Will Allen is not expected to be brought back for another season.

Pittsburgh Steelers host top safeties Keanu Neal and Darian Thompson

Jim Wexell

The Steelers are looking for versatility and production on the back end, and may even reach a bit for it in the first round.

Most draft experts say that after Jalen Ramsey there aren't any safeties who'll be drafted in the first round, particularly with Karl Joseph recovering from a torn ACL.

But the Pittsburgh Steelers might beg to differ. Two of the four prospects they brought to the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex for a visit Wednesday will receive serious scrutiny as first-round safeties.

It was Art Rooney II who decreed that the pass defense must improve back on Jan. 28. And a few weeks later ,Kevin Colbert was asked what he'll look for in a defensive back.

"Production," said the Steelers general manager. "Obviously we want to see more interceptions."

They won't find anyone more productive than the co-highlight visitor yesterday, Darian Thompson, who broke Eric Weddle's Mountain West Conference career interception record with 19 at Boise State.

Thompson (6-1 7/8, 208) intercepted 12 passes the last two seasons, but he'll also come up and hit, as his 15 career tackles-for-loss attest.

Thompson is a smart, tough ballhawk who plays fast and consistently takes good angles as both a single-high or box safety, and he also has experience covering slot receivers.

He seems like the perfect player for the Steelers' needs; however, Thompson had an awful NFL Combine. He was timed in the 40 in the 4.66 to 4.72 range, put up only 12 reps on the bench, and had an uninspiring 32 1/2 vertical jump and agility times of 4.33 in the short shuttle and 7.26 in the 3-cone.

Those numbers don't bode well for a fifth-year senior out of a mid-major conference, but Thompson said he was sick that day, possibly with food poisoning, and he rebounded to run 4.53 and 4.55 40s at his pro day. He also told the Idaho Statesman that day, "I've never been a great tester."

The other visiting safety on Wednesday, Keanu Neal, is a much different player than Thompson. Neal's two years younger and had only four career interceptions. And while Thompson is a free safety who can play strong safety, Neal (6-0 1/2, 211, 4.62) is a strong safety who's played center field at times for Florida and showed good ball skills at the Combine. Neal's a bigger, younger athlete with more upside than realized skills.

Analysts' grades on Neal range from the first to the fifth rounds, but the Steelers have been linked to Neal throughout the process. He's comparable as a college prospect to the college-aged Kam Chancellor, a 6-3, 231-pounder who was drafted in the fifth round in 2010, and a player about whom Tomlin spoke highly before the draft that year.

The Steelers' other draft visitors Wednesday were UCLA OT Caleb Benenoch (6-5 1/2, 311) and Temple CB Tavon Young (5-9 1/8, 183, 4.41).

Benenoch spent most of his college career at right tackle, but did start four games at guard, and played well. He's a versatile, mobile knee-bender who'll be drafted higher by a team that runs zone-blocking schemes.

The estimate here is that Benenoch is a late third or fourth-round prospect.

Young was given the symbolic jersey No. 1 at Temple, signifying a high degree of toughness. He's also smart and came up with six career interceptions.

Young is another of a group of mid-round cornerbacks who've either visited or who are scheduled to visit with the Steelers, which could indicate the team plans to make multiple picks at the position.

Something tells me the Steelers will grade out a few guys as 2nd round Safety prospects. Thompson, Bell, Neal, Cash, Killebrew and end up with one of them at that spot.

Star Alabama DT Robinson visits with Steelers

Chris Adamski | Tuesday, April 5, 2016

The Steelers hosted a draft-eligible player Tuesday morning, and it was a big one.

Literally.

Six-foot-four, 307-pound Alabama defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson visited the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex for a pre-draft visit Tuesday.

A consensus All-American as a junior last season for the national champion Crimson Tide, he's projected as a first-round pick in what is considered a very strong draft for defensive linemen.

A former five-star recruit who has all the physical gifts, Robinson was an elite run-stopper in college. He played at all spots across Alabama's 3-4 defensive line — a notable skillset for the Steelers, who lost starting nose tackle Steve McLendon in free agency and could use additional depth at end.

Robinson had 21½ tackles for loss and nine sacks in his college career.

Robinson and Baylor's Andrew Billings are among the consensus best defensive tackles available in this year's draft. The Steelers met with the 311-pound Billings at Baylor's pro Day last month.

Entering his third season, Daniel McCullers is the only pure defensive tackle with any NFL experience currently on the Steelers roster.

Clemson S T.J. Green Set For Thursday Pre-Draft Visit With Steelers

BY DAVE BRYAN APRIL 6, 2016

The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be set to visit with yet another safety prospect on Thursday. According to a Wednesday night Twitter post by Clemson safety T.J. Green, he recently landed in Pittsburgh.

Green, who measured in at the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine at 6024, 209-pounds, ran his 40-yard dash in 4.34 seconds while in Indianapolis. Last season he recorded 95 total tackles and one sack. The underclassman also only registered one interception in the 38 games that he played in at Clemson.

According to STATS, Green allowed 22 catches for 437 yards and a touchdown while in coverage last season. He also reportedly missed 15 total tackles last season.

So far during the month of April the Steelers have brought in several top-rated safety prospects for visits and that list includes Darian Thompson, Jeremy Cash, Deon Bush, and Keanu Neal. Additionally, safeties Jayron Kearse and Vonn Bell are likely to be brought in for visits as well in the coming days or weeks.

It's definitely going to be a heavy secondary draft. I'd love it if the right CB and S fell into our laps for Rd-1 and Rd-2. I'm getting excited.
