| Golden grabs starting job after paying dues for years

Robert Golden always has been one the Steelers' most “special” players.
Over five seasons, he has forged a special respect among his teammates.
Golden has made a gradual, special ascension in terms of stature and responsibility on the team.
And now, he is about to embark on a special new role.
Unquestioned starter. Veteran leader.
Of the defense.
“We've always known Rob has been great player,” fellow safety Mike Mitchell said. “He's been a contributor every single year since I've been here. And I'm just happy to really see him now get an opportunity.”
Golden's bona fides on special teams long have been established. Since he entered the league as an undrafted rookie in 2012, no Steelers player has had more special-teams snaps than Golden's 1,067. He was the unit's captain in 2014 and '15.
But for the first time last season, Golden's impact started to expand beyond special teams: He began to be integrated on a wide-scale basis into the defense.
