Tomlin on Worilds

This might be me reading too much into something again, but I found Tomlin's press conference comments today about Jason Worilds interesting. He didn't sound too confident in him (especially his answer to the second question). But maybe that's just the way I'm interpreting it.

A. "As a non-starter or a starter in waiting, he better be capable of distinguishing himself in whatever we ask him to do, whether it's on the right side or the left side. I don't look for strengths in that area. I identify weakness, and hopefully he's willing to work on them. He better be versatile enough to help us in whatever ways we ask him."

Q. Has Worilds made that jump from rookie to second-year guy that you hoped?

A. "It's in progress. Check back with me."

He always downplays everything. That's why I feel I might be reading too much into what he said.

Q. Coach, you just won the Super Bowl. How do you feel?
A. It's just one game. We're not going to focus on it. We've got a lot of work to do to get ready for next season.

I think he's just saying that Worilds hasn't made himself a starter, therefore he has a lot to work on to make himself a player, "No longer in waiting" but a starter.

Personally I think Worilds has shown us his talents and he can be a starter when called upon. I also think that Tomlin is one of those coaches that refuses to blow smoke up his players' arses, therefore making them bigger than they are. He hasn't done it with any of his starters and I certainly don't think he's going to do it with a 'first-stringer in waiting'.
