| By Ed Bouchette / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Troy Smith already made history against the Steelers, and now he is trying to create a little more, this time with them. He remains the only rookie quarterback to beat a Dick LeBeau Steelers defense in this century, and now he's trying to become the second Heisman Trophy winner to play for them in their 80-season history. Notre Dame halfback Johnny Lattner, the 1953 Heisman winner, was a Steelers first-round draft choice in 1954. He played one season for them. They previously tried to lure another Heisman winner, Army's Doc Blanchard, by drafting him first in 1946. The Army, however, turned down his request to play pro football and he became a fighter pilot instead. So now it's Smith's turn as the 2006 Heisman winner from Ohio State, and while there would seem to be no room at quarterback on a roster filled with veterans, well, you never know. "I wouldn't say I'm trying to buck anybody," said Smith, one of five quarterbacks on the roster. "More so than anything, I would say I'm trying to fit in, trying to be the best teammate I can. And as a quarterback my learning curve is ever-evolving. I'm doing nothing but learning from these vets." | It'll be interesting to see what he does. I thought Smith had a lot of potential when he came out of college. It seems that one of two things hold true:
1. He wasn't talented enough to play at this level
2. His talents were used properly by his coaches
He did go to the ratbirds so it is highly likely that #2 fills this scenario very well. However, I just don't see how he's going to fit in on the Steelers roster. _________________ 60 MIN 53 MEN 1 NATION STEELERS NATION I am the MAN that created the MYTH that started the LEGEND Don't choose good when greatness is available!

You know you're bad when you get benched for Alex Smith. _________________ Wallace108: Jon, how the hell do you expect any of us to ever follow your posts? You always set the bar awfully high. You know you're bad when you get benched for Alex Smith. Sounds like how we reacted after the Rats picked up Kordell Stewart. I don't hold out much hope for Smith making this roster. The only way I see him "standing out" is by lighting himself on fire while wearing a firecracker suit and twirling neon lighted batons. I hope I'm wrong about Troy. We could sure use some youth at the backup QB position to lock it down for the future. _________________ -"I stand corrected... You know you're bad when you get benched for Alex Smith. Not that I want any injuries, but wouldn't it be funny ironic if let's say Ben has to set out one of the games against the rats and Troy Smith comes in and goes All Pro on that staunt ratbird defense and leads the Steelers to a mega blowout? _________________ 60 MIN 53 MEN 1 NATION STEELERS NATION I am the MAN that created the MYTH that started the LEGEND Don't choose good when greatness is available!

| Troy Smith was benched with SF because he got in coaches face. He's a talented player, and always played well as a starter on in relief. His statistics prove that: TD-INT 8-5 Passing yards 1,734 QB Rating 78.5 Good luck to him, i'd like to see him on the roster. Young blood mixed up in that old-ass stable of QB's wouldn't be so bad _________________ "Either you're playing dumb, or it's not an act". -Judge Judy

| Dennis Dixon > Troy Smith.
Maybe we could just him on special teams. I didn't like him at OSU, I don't like him in Black and Gold. He's a "junk" quarterback. _________________ Twitter: @SteelersYak

| Troy Smith is a mediocre QB with a bad attitude. I hope he does well in the USFL. _________________ Wallace108: Jon, how the hell do you expect any of us to ever follow your posts?
