Steelers turn to ageless Charlie Batch once again

PITTSBURGH — Mike Wallace is in his fourth season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, so the wide receiver is familiar with all this talk about Charlie Batch.

Asked if it was at all concerning that the man throwing the ball to him on Sunday will soon be 38 years old, Wallace shrugged.

“He’s been old,” he said of Batch. “It’s not like he just got old. Chuck’s been old since I got here, so it’s nothing new.”

Neither is Batch making a fill-in start for his hometown Steelers (6-4), who are at Cleveland (2-8) this weekend. For the eighth time since he signed with Pittsburgh 11 years ago, Batch will be under center to begin a game for the Steelers.

No Steeler is older than Batch, whose birthday is Dec. 5. He spent the first four years of his career with Detroit, but only nose tackle Casey Hampton was with Pittsburgh before Batch arrived.

“They say Charlie built the building,” guard Willie Colon deadpanned. “That’s what I heard.”

Teammates might enjoy yukking it up when it comes to Batch’s age, but they’re happy they have him and more content than could be reasonably expected for an NFL team down to its third-string quarterback.

“I feel comfortable with Charlie,” Wallace said. “I feel like he can lead us to victory any game he plays in. Just two years ago when we played with him the first four games we were 3-1 so I’m excited about having Chuck out there.”

It's obvious that Batch's teammates have a lot of respect for him. And just as important, they seem to have a lot of confidence in him. As well they should.

Soooo should I start Wallace or Julio Jones this week?

In all honesty, Wallace'll probably show up against the shitty teams.

I think Wallace tugs on his meat to much. I cant even think of a single game he has looked good in this year. Like I said before...he ought to give his salary to Dwyer and Miller because they have carried his lame ass all year....I hope he decides to show up Sunday against the Browns. We will see.

The question is, how will Charlie perform knowing that his son got demoted to the practice squad?

I hope that will not reflect the way he plays...

How many fantasy points does 1 touchdown get you? Or how about 3 touchdowns over three years? I know that doesn't get you very many real points, but how many fantasy points does it get you?

Seriously though, Fantasy points? It's bad enough that Goodell is catering the NFL towards a fantasy market, buy you too? I'm pretty sure you're being facetious. Wallace hasn't played well in Brown's absence, and for a reason. I bet his production picks up tenfold when Brown returns.

In 3 1/2 seasons, Wallace has 30 touchdowns. In 2 1/2 seasons, Brown has 3 touchdowns.

Let's hope Batch can help Wallace get to 31 or 32 on Sunday.

It's apparent that after the last two weeks of QB frustration, the Steelers need to find a substantial increase in the backup QB role. Batch and Lefty are NOT the answer anymore.
