After spending nearly 30 years as an NFL assistant, Richard Mann finally is getting the chance to coach at home.
Mann, an Aliquippa native, was hired Wednesday as the Steelers' wide receivers coach — a position that will allow him to reunite with Mike Tomlin, who once coached with Mann in Tampa Bay.
Mann and Tomlin coached together with the Bucs from 2002-05.
Tomlin needed less than a week to fill the vacancy created when Scottie Montgomery left to rejoin the Duke University staff.
Mann, 65, returns to the NFL after spending the past three seasons assisting and consulting players before they went into the draft. He last coached in the league in 2009, which was his eighth and final season with Tampa Bay.
That year, he also served as the assistant head coach under former coach Raheem Morris.
Mann was on the Bucs' staff when they won the Super Bowl during the 2002 season. They had at least one 1,000-yard receiver during each of his first seven seasons, including former Pitt receiver Antonio Bryant.
Mann began his coaching career at Aliquippa in 1970. He later coached at Arizona State and Louisville before moving into the NFL, where he coached with the Colts, Browns, Jets, Ravens, Chiefs and Redskins. He is a member of the Beaver County Hall of Fame.
