| For those who will be on during the game, there are now two options for discussion. You can participate either in this thread or in the chatbox, which is located at the bottom of the forum. Only Steelers Xtreme members who are logged in are able to view the chatbox. PM one of the admins if you have any questions about it. I'm starting this thread earlier than usual because I'm ready for the season to begin. HERE WE GO!!! _________________ If you're going to be a smart ass, you'd better be smart. - Stopping RB Johnson is key
By Chris Bradford
In five career games against the Steelers, Tennessee’s Chris Johnson has never rushed for over 100-yards in any. He got close last season though. Too close for the Steelers’ liking.
Johnson has rushed for 302 yards for an average of 60.4 yards per game (3.84 per carry) in his career against the Steelers. But in the Titans’ 26-23 win in Nashville last October, Johnson ran for 91 yards on 19 attempts (4.79 ypc). Stopping the Titans’ diminutive star running back should be the key to beating Tennessee.
How have the Steelers been (mostly) successful in containing Johnson?
“When you have someone who is so much of a home run hitter like him, you give him any little crease, he’s going to make you pay,” said S Troy Polamalu. ”It’s important for us to be gap sound and stick on our keys the entire game.”
Johnson, who led the NFL with 2,006 rushing yards in 2009, believes he can do it again behind a revamped offensive line. Still, he respects the challenge the Steelers’ defense presents because of players like Polamalu.
“They’ve still got a lot of veterans and are smart,” said Johnson. “Anytime you’ve got a lot of veterans, 10-plus years, nine-plus years, you’re going to go against a smart team. It’s not always about one team being better than the other team. If those guys are smart and know how to stay in their gap, that’s how they know how to make a lot of plays.”

- Titans Want to Contain, Pressure Steelers QB
By Craig Peters
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Titans defensive tackle Jurrell Casey correctly remembered his first trip to Pittsburgh included a sack of Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger.
The problem for Tennessee, however, is it was the only one on the day. Roethlisberger was managing an injury and used quick dropback passes to get rid of the football faster than he usually does. He threw five TD passes in the first half of Pittsburgh’s 38-17 win.
Tennessee will open the season at noon (CT) Sunday at Pittsburgh. It will be the sixth straight year the former AFC Central rivals have met.
Titans defenders believe Roethlisberger will hold onto the ball longer in the upcoming contest and think it will be important to contain Roethlisberger in the pocket while applying pressure up front and holding steady on the back end for extended periods of time.
Roethlisberger has played in four of the past five meetings, and Tennessee has recorded 11 sacks of him in those four games: five in 2008, four in 2009, one in 2011 and one by Derrick Morgan in 2012. Defensive tackles have accounted for seven of those sacks, meaning when the edge has been contained it’s been easier to reach Roethlisberger.
Defensive players must do more than just get in his area, however, because of his ability to shed tackles.
“He’s a really good football player. We know that and then he’s elusive,” Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray said. “You can be free and can’t get him down and you’ve got to be under control when you’re rushing. You can’t be out of control and think you’re going to get him down because he’ll throw you off with one arm and then he’s going to look downfield because he’s probably the best at looking downfield when guys are rushing and still finding targets.”

| Two key points.
Johnson under 100 Keep Roethlisberger in the pocket
We all know if you contain Johnson it makes the titans become one dimensional. We also know if you keep Roethlisberger in the pocket he becomes less of a threat as when he is on the move. _________________ 60 MIN 53 MEN 1 NATION STEELERS NATION I am the MAN that created the MYTH that started the LEGEND Don't choose good when greatness is available!

- Steelers Le’Veon Bell And Heath Miller Out For Titans game
By Christina Rivers
Although rookie running back Le’Veon Bell has been taken out of the walking boot that was protecting his injured foot and tight end Heath Miller was removed from the PUP list this week, neither will play for the Pittsburgh Steelers when they host the Tennessee Titans during their home opener on Sunday, Sept. 8. Fans are anxious to see both players actively involved in the 2013 NFL season, but Miller, the Steelers MVP in 2012, is still recovering from a surgically-repaired ACL/MCL injury and has not been given a timetable for return to play. A return date on Bell is not available either.

| 24-10 Good Guys.
The bad news: The game won't be televised in my area.
The good news: I'll be going to an awesome Steelers bar ... Billy's Black and Gold in Sharon, Pa. ... which I haven't been to in years. _________________ If you're going to be a smart ass, you'd better be smart. Otherwise, you're just an ass.

Well, it's now looking like I might not be going after all. My designated driver (some call her my wife) might not be able to go, and there's no way I can make it through a Steelers game sober. I might end up watching it online. _________________ If you're going to be a smart ass, you'd better be smart. Otherwise, you're just an ass.

I'm not sure if Adrian Peterson could have run behind that line. I think the bigger mistake might have been letting Starks go. _________________ If you're going to be a smart ass, you'd better be smart. Otherwise, you're just an ass.

| Here's something to consider: Even though Beachum seemed to perform well for a guy tossed into the mix, we'll never know if he was able to make the right assignment calls prior to the snap. Remember, Pouncey makes the initial read of the defense and makes his calls ... which trickle out to the rest of the line. If the back-up center doesn't make the right read or the right call, it causes confusion to the rest of the line. I believe in the ability of the linemen the Steelers have, but it is going to take some time for them to get on the same page. | |

You're absolutely right. I give Beachum tons of credit for being able to learn different positions, but I'd prefer to have a backup center who has some experience at the position. I can't remember exactly when they started working Beachum in at center, but wasn't it relatively recent? _________________ If you're going to be a smart ass, you'd better be smart. Not sure exactly when Beachum started working at the center position, but I believe it's a new position for him this year. It's strange, after this game ended I couldn't tell if there was a problem with the gameplan, the QB, the offensive line, the new blocking scheme. Unfortunately, it's probably a combination of all of these ... which means lots of work to fix. The sad part is, I'm not sure Tenn will win more than 5 games this year. They really aren't a good football team.

| Here's the bottomline, if the offensive line doesn't get their shite together, then there is no hope for this offense, regardless of who the OC is.
I'm confident in our defense though. They did a decent job, considering the field position they were put in constantly yesterday. The titans had one drive after the fumble in to the endzone that the defense fell apart on. Other than that, I think they did a decent job.
Another sore point: Special Teams

Good point! It seemed that every time the Steelers punted, the Titan's return man didn't have anyone within 20 yards. I kept waiting for the guy to take one to the house. Thankfully, the Titans are a bad team otherwise the score would have been 56-2.

| Actually, I thought a few of those punts were well placed. Without coverage by the Steelers, the return guy wasn't trapped against the sideline. It's really a coffin corner without a lid. What's that called? | |
