UPDATED: Steelers release Woodley

The Steelers have told outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley he will be released, according to a team source.

Woodley, who had three years remaining on his contract, was scheduled to earn $8 million and count $13.6 million against the salary cap in 2014.

It is not known if the Steelers will designate Woodley for a June 2 release, but, if they do, that means they will pick up $8 million in cap space at that point, not now.

Im not sure how I feel about this because I really like Woodley, but I have to trust that the organization knows what it is doing. Should free up money for that CB we need as well as some other spots (I hope). Have to hope that a Jones/Worilds combo can get it done.

This move was to be expected, but I'm a little concerned about the depth (actually, the lack of depth) at linebacker.

I like Woodley, he's been one of my favorite players, but the last few seasons he appears to be wearing down and always out with an injury, back for 2-3 games, then out again.

As much as I like him, I don't think he's worth the 8 million at this point.

I wish they would have worked out something. I would have liked to have seen them give him one more season (last chance).  I still think that Woodley is a beast when he is healthy.

I kind of feel bad about this.

I can see him going to another AFC team and kicking butt, though

It's always possible, but the Steelers have a hell of a track record of knowing when to part ways with players.

I am worried about Jarvis Jones, though. The guys is kind of small. I guess we'll see, however.

I'm going to miss Wood, Foote, Clark, and (probably/maybe Keisel).

Time to pass the torch I guess.

Yeah but seriously, there was and forever will be only one "count Dracula in cleats"  Lambert was intense from the day he was born. Just looking at the guy scared anyone playing offense.

It's going to be really strange to see Woodley in a Raider's uniform.  UGH!

Sorry, but 3 straight years of under performing while collecting the biggest LB contract ever written by the Burgh, is unacceptable. Steelers are sending a message, perform at expected levels, or go play for the Raiders or Jags.

Woodley had A good year. The rest of the time, he has been a huge let down. Along with Sanders... adios!!!

Thanks, but I still have my #56 jersey. Guess its a Jordan Zumwalt jersey now.

Woodley had 29 QB Sacks in his first 3 years with the Steelers. Its a few more than other recent OLB picks of the Steelers, so its pretty hilarious how some fans hate him so much, IMO.
