Former Cincinnati Bengals tight end Reggie Kelly is at Steelers training camp this morning and could be signed to compete for the No. 2 tight end spot.

Kelly, 34, played 13 seasons in the NFL, the last seven with the Bengals. He had 194 catches and 1,760 yards in his career, but he is known as a blocking tight end who is often asked to block defensive ends and outside linebackers.

He's been in the league for 13 seasons. I'm guessing he's more of a blocking TE, because his receiving numbers are horrible. Last season he caught 10 passes for 42 yards.

Well that's more of what we need anyways IMO. Heath is more of a recieving threat. My stance on TEs is they are glorified blockers that should be utilized as more of an "element of surprise" rather than a "go to guy".

I think how we use Heath is perfect. You look at TEs like Antonio Gates, Anthony Gonzales, and even Shannon Sharpe (as we discussed in another thread), and they're nothing more than big receivers. I don't think a TE should be the primary target. But you do want them to be able to be a part of the passing game, like Heath is. When you have a TE who might be a great blocker but doesn't have good hands, you have a situation like we did last season with Spaeth in the Jets game. Kelly leaves Steelers camp without signing contract

Tuesday, August 09, 2011
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers were looking at another tight end to add to their roster, one whose work they knew very well. But, like a host of other free agents who have visited St. Vincent College, this one left without a contract, too.

Former Cincinnati Bengals tight end Reggie Kelly, 34, was at training camp today, but he left campus without signing a contract.

"We had a nice visit," Coach Mike Tomlin said. "We'll see where the process goes."
