| Steelers notebook: Foster, Gay not sure of their return next season as free agency looms
January 19, 2016 By Sam Werner / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
It happens at the end of every NFL season, but offensive lineman Ramon Foster admitted that it’s still odd to look around the locker room after the final game and think about how many faces will be back in August.
This year, after the Steelers’ 23-16 AFC divisional playoff loss Sunday to the Denver Broncos, Foster was one of those guys.
Foster, an unrestricted free agent, said Monday he doesn’t know whether or not he’ll be back and declined to comment too strongly either way.
“I’m not sure what’s going to happen, man,” he said. “The business part is going to take care of itself. It’ll be interesting. I honestly can’t even say a lot because this will be one interesting offseason right here.”
Foster came to the Steelers in 2009 as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee, but has developed into one of the cornerstones of their offensive line at guard. He noted that three more seasons would give him 10 with the Steelers, but admitted that it isn’t totally his decision whether or not he gets there.
“That’s upper management, [general manager] Kevin Colbert and them, whatever direction they decide to go in,” Foster said. “My job is to stay healthy, stay out of trouble. Don’t end up getting tased on South Beach, that type of stuff.”
Cornerback William Gay, another unrestricted free agent, also was noncommittal about his offseason hopes or expectations.
“No one knows about the offseason,” Gay said. “Do I want to be here? Yes. Do I know? Nah. Only the owners, Kevin Colbert, Mike [Tomlin] know.”
As a player who was drafted by the Steelers, left for one season and then returned, Gay has a special appreciation for what it means to play for the franchise.
“This is the team that believed in me coming out of Louisville,” Gay said. “There’s a lot of heart here, but like I said, we don’t know the business. All I do is prepare for the present. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future.”

| So as long as you don't get tased on South Beach and you have all your limbs, Mike Munchak can make it work. Bye bye Foster. | |

| Got to save some $$ and I think the Steelers will go with Chris Hubbard at G next year, or look in the draft. Gay might get a 2 year deal unless he wants too much $$. | |

| BJ Finney? They gave him a hefty raise to stay on the practice squad, maybe the coaches see something in him
Gay is 30 so im hoping that will scare other teams from trying to give him too large an offer we can't afford. I think he's key to our defense going forward.

| I had thought the cap problems were behind the Steelers - apparently not, which could impact retaining second-tier players like Foster (I think Gay stays - he left once already and it did not end well)
Interesting article on ESPN.com by Bill Barnwell (one of the few Grantland writers who stayed with ESPN)
Steelers will need young stars to emerge
The good news is that quite a few of their upper-echelon players are young. Heyward is 26. Shazier is 24. The same is true on the offensive side of the ball, where Brown is 27 and fellow wideout Bryant is 24. Mauling guard David DeCastro is 26, as is Pouncey. Bell, somehow, is only 23. If those players can stay healthy, there's little reason to think they will play worse in the years to come. ...
The problem is that the Steelers have struggled to surround that young talent with the sort of solid depth that would raise Pittsburgh's ceiling to that of a perennial Super Bowl contender. That's been primarily related to the salary cap, and it's a problem which is going to impact the Steelers for the foreseeable future.
Look at Pittsburgh's cap page for 2015 and you'll see where the problems are this year. Pittsburgh owed $19.5 million in dead money to players who are no longer on the roster, including LaMarr Woodley ($8.6 million), Polamalu ($4.5 million), and Scobee ($2.5 million). The good news is that all of that money slides off of Pittsburgh's cap this offseason, and the Steelers have less than $800,000 in dead money assigned to their cap in 2016.
The bad news? All of that money has already being gobbled up by raises for Pittsburgh's star players. The price of everyone is going up next year ...
As envious as teams should be about their young talent, and as impressive as they've been in 2014 and 2015, that lack of depth and inability to fill out the roster with competent contributors may be what costs the Steelers their chance at winning a Super Bowl with this core of players.

Gay was a 5th round pick, with not great speed, but a nose for the football and good understanding of defense and coverages. A slot CB essentially, which is where he allegedly excels. Basically a young version of DeShea Townsend. BJ Finney. I forgot he was on the PS. I liked what he showed in the preseason and thought he had a chance to make the team over Hubbard. Might be onto something there.

| I mused to myself a while back that at some point in the near future we may actually be loaded at the CB position, and for as much as I like Willie, he might not be necessary next season. _________________ "Right now I'm having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. | This from Gerry Dulac of the P-G in today's chat
Gerry Dulac: Foster likely will be gone,. Not going to chase him. They will bring back Gay because I don't see him commanding any type of big money in free agency. Plus they don't have a lot. And he's the best right now of what they have.

I think the Steelers are going to take a Guard with one of their 7th Round picks. Look for Connor McGovern out of the University of Missouri. Has good size, he's a weight room warrior (expected one of the strongest players in this draft), and his game should translate well to playing on the interior of the line. He also has the flexibility to step over to tackle in an emergency... Kind of sounds like Kelvin Beachum coming out of SMU. The Steelers like to pick these flexible late-round guys for the o-line and they've had pretty good luck with it. _________________ "Success isn't owned, it's leased and the rent is due every day." - TJ Watt

| Steelers Free Agent Wish List: Week 1
By: Daniel Sager | January 28, 2016
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ cap situation is far better than it’s been in years past; at least, it looks that way on the surface, anyway.
Presently, the Steelers are projected to be a little over $10 million under the salary cap. The cap is projected to be between $150-$153 million, up $7-10 million from 2015.
That’s the good news. The bad news is the Steelers’ secondary depth chart is dangerously thin, which will cause money to be allocated to that area.
There will be movement in free agency from the Steelers, but as usual, Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert will ensure that their own free agents are locked up before checking elsewhere. With that said, however, the Steelers have made a pair of “splash” signings by going after Mike Mitchell in 2014 and DeAngelo Williams last season, so going outside of their own locker room is not unprecedented. Let’s look at some options:
Colts TE Dwayne Allen
Allen quietly snagged eight touchdowns in 2014 before dealing with an injury plagued 2015 campaign. Allen is both a capable blocker and versatile athlete, and he could serve a dual function in Pittsburgh’s multifaceted offense. The Steelers are in desperate need of youth, and the options in the draft are slim. Given Allen’s injuries and the Colts’ likelihood of retaining Coby Fleener instead, Allen could be in the market for a one-year “prove it” deal from someone.
Chances of Steelers going for it: 25/1
G Ramon Foster
Foster is one of the top guards on the market. He is the veteran member of a very solid Steelers offensive line, and although he could potentially get more money elsewhere, he could take a slight hometown discount for the sake of continuity.
Chances of the Steelers going for it: 3/1
Former Lions DE/DT Haloti Ngata
Ngata wasn’t quite the All-Pro that he was in Baltimore last season in Detroit, but he’s still a top-tier defensive lineman with some gas left in his tank. Ngata will undoubtedly want to play for a contender, and he’s versatile enough to make the switch to nose tackle in Steve McLendon’s potential absence.
Chances of the Steelers going for it: 20/1

| ESPN: Steelers to sign William Gay, 'moving On from Will Allenby Bryan DeArdo With less than two weeks until the start of free agency, the Steelers' offseason game plan is beginning to take shape. After reporting that the Steelers are likely to pick between free agent linemen Kelvin Beachum and Ramon Foster, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler also said on Friday that the team has already made executive decisions on how it will begin to construct its secondary for the 2016 season. According to Fowler, the Steelers are likely "moving on" from strong safety Will Allen, but will look to sign William Gay, and could work out a deal with Gay before the March 9 deadline. The team is likely moving on from safety Will Allen, all but ensuring the team needs a new starting safety in 2016 alongside Mike Mitchell," Fowler said with regard to Allen. "Considering Allen was a utility defensive back for much of his career, he filled the stat sheet as a starter for Pittsburgh -- 80 tackles, four sacks, eight passes defended. But Allen is 33, and this is a chance to upgrade that spot." In his second stint with the Steelers, Allen enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career in 2015. He started all 13 games he played in, and set career highs in forced fumbles, passes defensed, and sacks. Against the Rams in Week 3, Allen had a key interception late that helped Pittsburgh record its second victory of the season. But it appears that his age--he'll turn 34 in May--and the Steelers 30th place finish in 2015 overshadowed all the good that Allen did last year, as the Steelers look to strengthen a secondary that was abused on several occasions last season. With Allen most likely moving on, Pittsburgh has options at free safety. They could let Robert Golden--who played well in relief of Allen this past season--try out for the starting job. Pittsburgh will surely draft a strong safety, with several good ones likely to be available by the time the Steelers make their first pick in the draft. Then, there's the prospect of singing a free agent to replace Allen. If the Steelers go that route, they'll surely look into singing veteran Eric Weddle, who will most likely be on the open market when free agency season begins on March 9. Continuity is most likely the main reason why the Steelers want to bring back Gay, who is easily the longest tenured player in Pittsburgh's secondary. With Senquez Golson yet to play a regular season snap, the team wants a veteran presence at cornerback, and Gay, who has played in two Super Bowls for the Steelers, certainly provides that. It's apparent that the Steelers are putting their money where their mouths are with regard to the secondary. While Allen shouldn't shoulder most of the blame for the team's lackluster statistics against the pass, the Steelers promised changes to a secondary that finished two spots shy of being dead last in pass defense last season. http://pit.247sports.com/Bolt/ESPN-Steelers-to-sign-William-Gay-moving-on-from-Will-Allen-43948678 | |

| Depends on if they re-sign Beachum, they won't let both Beach & Foster walk.
Unless, 1. They really like Hubbard, Finney 2. They believe they can draft a guard who can step in an play right away. _________________ Known as BLACK_AND_YELLOW from SF

| It's time to move on from Will Allen. He did a good job with the Steelers while here, and he didn't cost a whole lot of money. He did a great job filling in when players were injured and really played hard whenever he was on the field.
He's the type of player that doesn't get a lot of love or appreciation from fans, but I think he's been a good player for this team with limited athletic ability. He openly wanted to be a Steeler and wanted to play here.
I thank him for his time and efforts with the Steelers. By all accounts a good dude.
William Gay has played well enough that he deserves to be signed if they can agree on a reasonable number.
It appears that we are getting a clearer picture of which positions they will address in free agency or the draft. Once again we'll be praying for a meaningful free agent acquisition in a few weeks. This may be the year. _________________ I'm a shell of my former self.

I'm 95% sure he is gone unless the market isn't big on him from the injury. I also think somebody pays Foster more than the Steelers want. So that leaves AV, Hubbard, Pouncey, DeCastro, Gilbert to start...Wallace and Adams in reserve and a rookie and somebody else as the 9 O line. Then it frees up the Steelers to look at who they can find in free agency as Safety or TE, plus sign the guys they want like Gay, Golden and maybe McCain. Then they draft for what they didn't get. They are in an OK position I think. The next few weeks will tell a lot.

| Steelers Working To Keep One Of LT Kelvin Beachum Or G Ramon Foster
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the Steelers are working to retain one of LT Kelvin Beachum or G Ramon Foster before the start of free agency.
According to La Canfora, it’s unlikely that both players will sign elsewhere in the coming weeks.
Steelers GM Kevin Colbert said previously that they planned to see where the market went for Beachum before deciding whether to bring him back.
However, it appears as though things may have changed in regards to their free agent plans.
Beachum, 26, played out the final year of his four-year, $2.146 million rookie contract, which includes a base salary of $1.542 million and is now in position to test the open market in the coming weeks.
Unfortunately for Beachum, he was placed on season-ending injured reserve just over a month into the season. The two parties discussed a contract extension before the start of the regular season, but couldn’t reach an agreement.
In 2015, Beachum appeared in all five games for the Steelers.
Foster, 30, wound up signing on with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee back in 2009. He has spent all seven of his years in Pittsburgh and is now in line to be one of the better guards in this year’s free agent class.
In 2015, Foster appeared in all 16 games for the Steelers and was rated by Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 16 guard out of 81 qualifying players.
We have both players featured in our Top 100 – 2016 Free Agents list.

| Give me Foster over Beachum all day, every day. Beachum had a great run, really beat the odds from both a size and talent evaluation standpoint, but his play had really started to deteriorate even before his injury. | |
