NFL names 8 Steelers to Super Bowl 50 Golden Team

The Steelers came up a few bricks shy of Super Bowl 50, but they remain the dominant force in the half-century history of the NFL’s championship game.

Super Bowl 50 Golden Team

OFFENSE

QUARTERBACK: Joe Montana
RUNNING BACKS: Franco Harris, Emmitt Smith
WIDE RECEIVERS: Jerry Rice, Lynn Swann
TIGHT END: Jay Novacek
OFFENSIVE TACKLES: Art Shell, Forrest Gregg
OFFENSIVE GUARDS: Gene Upshaw, Larry Allen
CENTER: Mike Webster

DEFENSE

DEFENSIVE ENDS: Reggie White, Charles Haley
DEFENSIVE LINEMEN: Joe Greene, Randy White
OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS: Lawrence Taylor, Jack Ham
INSIDE LINEBACKERS: Jack Lambert, Ray Lewis
CORNERBACKS: Mel Blount, Deion Sanders
SAFETIES: Ronnie Lott, Jake Scott

HEAD COACH: Chuck Noll

Not only are the six Lombardi Trophies won by the Steelers more than any other team, they placed more all-stars on the Super Bowl 50 Golden Team than anyone else, the NFL announced today.

Seven Steelers players — nearly one-third of the 23 “starters” — plus coach Chuck Noll were chosen to the all-time Super Bowl team as chosen by the Pro Football Hall of Fame selectors. All eight also are in the Hall of Fame.

Noll, the only coach chosen is also the only coach with a perfect 4-0 record in Super Bowls. All seven of the Steelers picked for the team played for Noll in the 1970s:

Halfback Franco Harris, wide receiver Lynn Swann and center Mike Webster on offense; on defense, tackle Joe Greene, linebackers Jack Ham and Jack Lambert and cornerback Mel Blount.

The only two Steelers Hall of Famers from the 1970s who did not make the all-time Super Bowl team were quarterback Terry Bradshaw and wide receiver John Stallworth. Bradshaw was beaten out by the only other quarterback with a 4-0 Super Bowl record, Joe Montana, who played at Ringgold High School. Swann and Jerry Rice were the two wide receivers chosen.

No second team was selected.

Super Bowl 50 will take place Feb. 7 at the San Francisco 49ers new Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

It's great Noll chosen as the head coach. Stallworth should have been on the list and Donnie Shell.

Yeah figured they'd dominate being that they're more recent. brady started something a few years ago when discussing a SB loss. He said something like: you can't win if you don't get here. Since then media wants to count 'how many times they've been there'. There is much more to be said of never losing which is all that needs said for choosing Noll.

They seemed to pick Montanna based on the drive in SB 23. Ben's drive against the Cardinals was far more impressive with a once in a lifetime TD pass to Holmes to seal it.

Glad Noll especially got chosen as the HC. 8 out of 50 entries is awesome. Agree with Montana being named over Brady too. There's something to be said about being undefeated which is likewise why I take Noll over the Hoodie.

Blount over Rod Woodson? He was that good? Sorry if that's a stupid question I wasn't alive to see him play lol. But Rod Woodson was probably the best complete CB I've ever seen.

Remember, these are awards for Super Bowl performance. Rod Woodson didn't play in enough Super Bowls to merit a spot.

Mel Blount was that good. He was the player that made the NFL change the rules on contact with receivers. He was so dominant that they felt they had to do something about him. He was also a physically huge human being with great athleticism and power. The man was an absolute freak of nature because a man that size is not supposed to be able to move and hit like that.

Rod Woodson may have been the most complete corner I have ever seen as well. He is also that good.

Woodson has claimed that he doesn't understand how he can be named on the All-Century team when he wasn't the best Steelers cornerback ever. He says Blount is that man.

I know Rod is being classy, but I'm telling you.....Mel Blount was as dominant a player as anyone has ever been at that position.

As far as talent the tip goes to Woodson but they changed rules to slow Blount down and that didn't work. He was pretty damn good in his own right. I'd say it's a wash.

3-time SB MVP and he was the key of winning all those SB, not the kicker or the defense. The HOF voters actually know football, unlike the ESPN panel.

I'm still disappointed in the snub of Mitch Berger as punter. Who the hell is this Ray Guy guy? Sounds like a made up name to me.

I hope someone told those ignorant idiots that Rice wasn't there for all of Montana's SBs, 2 of 4 to be exact. What annoys me about Brady's ball washers is they ignore that the Pats* had a great defense in the early years of his career and a solid running game. Plus Adam Viniateri. And then they act like you have to admire Brady because he was this sixth round draft pick that didn't get much playing time in college. Uh sorry no.

Not sure why Reggie White over LC Greenwood. White has a dominant one game while LC had 4 great games and actually was our best defensive lineman overall in the 4 super bowls.

I'll tell you one guy who had a very impressive Super Bowl with us was Ron Johnson in 13. pretty much shut down Drew Pearson as a rookies up until the last 2 minutes of the game. That was a HUGE part of that game.

That point was brought up about Rice. Pats* fans want to give credit to brady for all the wins and blame the losses on the D. As you say those 1st 2 were largely the defense winning the game and I don't get how they blame the losses on defense when they scored, what was it, 17-20ish points in the 2 Giant losses? I can still see brady laughing and saying "they only expect thisoffense to score 17 points?" then went out and scored 17.

Easy. L.C. was a quiet professional who went about his business like a professional should.

His biggest attention getting action was wearing gold cleats.

Reggie was loud....on and off the field.

Yep and that shows how Brady can do no wrong with them, But yeah the early Pats* D under Belichick were top of the line. Belichick after all made his name as a defensive specialist. And actually they scored 14 points in the first Giants loss. It by no means is the worst performance by a QB of all time (not even close) but their O greatly under-performed that game given what they did all season. You can't expect the defense to win the game for you when you score only 14 points. Honestly I take Montana not just for the undefeated but that he performed much better overall. Golden Boy has twice as much attempts as Joe in two more games but only two more TD passes. And you're right their defense especially in the first one against the Rams carried them. The NFL definitely made the right choice choosing Montana to be the QB of this all-time team.
