Jonathan Dwyer quickly learned that bigger was better if you were a running back at Georgia Tech.
Playing the B-back (fullback) position in the Yellow Jackets' triple-option attack demands size — something Dwyer wasn't blessed with as a five-start recruit out of high school.
"I got beat up pretty bad that first year," said Dwyer, who weighed just over 200 pounds as a freshman. "I had to put on weight to be able to survive in college."
That same weight that helped him to an All-ACC Offensive Player of the Year honor might be the end of him in the pros.
Dwyer, the Steelers' sixth-round pick last year, is trying to catch on as the fourth running back at a position that is in dire need of depth.
But his constant struggles with weight have limited his reps and, along with it, his chances to impress the coaching staff.
Dwyer showed up to camp three weeks ago tipping the scales in excess of 240 pounds.
