Really hoping the steelers can wreak havoc with that lineup on passing downs.....

With Heyward back....that's a nasty unit.....and we'll need it to be, until we develop some corners who can play press/man

Steelers notebook: Watt works with 1st team on 1st day of OTAs

A rookie at his first NFL practice featuring veterans, T.J. Watt was taking reps with the Steelers first-team defense Tuesday.
"It was awesome," the team's first-round pick said. "It's just awesome to be out here with the guys and just listening to terminology and having clear-cut calls."
Watt spent the first day of 2017 organized team activities at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex lining up at right outside linebacker with Steelers regulars during team drills.
The "first-team" designation comes with a major caveat. Watt was playing in the spot that typically will be occupied by James Harrison. The 39-year-old Harrison, as has been customary during offseason and early-training camp practices in recent years, was held out. Harrison wore a sweatsuit and ran on his own.

But even so, and even with Watt's status as a first-round pick, it's not necessarily commonplace for a rookie to play with the starters in his first practice with the veterans.
"I felt like he did a pretty good job," inside linebacker Ryan Shazier said. "I felt like he caught on to the pace pretty well. Didn't feel like he struggled on what he had to do."

Yeah, like Jarvis Jones getting 8 sacks in a season.

Watt isn't playing TE any more than Gerod Holliman is going to be the Steelers safety of the future, or Dennis Dixon would be the next Kordell Stewart or the Wildcat offense was gonna take the league by storm. We can stop the lunacy any time now. IMO.

I'll be stoked if Watt is a special team ace and gets some situational pass rush reps any time before week 8. Forget teaching the kid to play TE.

Porter already impressed by Watt

"It's a tough defense. We ask him to do a lot," said Porter. "He played in a similar scheme at Wisconsin, just different terminology. Concept pretty much the same, different wording. He's does a lot of the stuff that we do. Once he picked up the terminology, it's been better every day."

During OTAs and into minicamp Watt has been getting the lion's share of snaps while James Harrison, who is entering his 13th season, has been more of a spectator. Harrison doesn't need the reps, and Porter feels it's more beneficial to give them to Watt while he is learning.

It's paying off, as Porter already has a comfort level with the rookie linebacker.

"What he has shown me so far is he is acclimated," said Porter. "I feel comfortable with him being out there. With the reps that he is getting, it's helping him prepare and get more comfortable with the defense.

Nice article Wally, but I seem to remember another OLB draft pick that came from a pro style defense in college that actually lead the SEC in sacks one year. I thought he picked things up well in minicamp too. Round 1, pick 30: Steelers select T.J. Watt - Page 2 2829330259

Villanueva reportedly said that TJ Watt is annoying to go against because he's relentless much like his brother. I'm loving the reports on this kid so far. Still no pads though, I want to see how the kid does with pads on.
