Rookies off to a good start
They didn't have a lot of time to prepare for their first practice, spending less than two hours in meetings before hitting the practice field.

But it didn't take long for the Steelers' rookies to get into the swing of things and remember that it's football they are playing, and instincts take over.

3 takes from Tomlin on minicamp

The Steelers are hosting their rookie minicamp at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex this weekend, and with three practices under their belt, Coach Mike Tomlin has liked what he has seen so far.

"Great weekend," said Tomlin. "An opportunity to get to know some of the guys that we are working with. Opportunity to get to evaluate some tryout guys. Excited to have them. I loved the general enthusiasm and attitude of the group collectively. Needless to say this is just the beginning. It looks that way. A very productive weekend thus far."

Playing fast, having fun

T.J. Watt wasn't willing to go as far as to say things are coming to him easily at rookie minicamp, but nor have his first two days on the field with the Steelers been a struggle.

"It's been a lot of fun," Watt assessed. "It's just been fun to get out here. And with this coaching group and with these guys it's a lot of energy, and that's what makes football really fun. Obviously, it's a lot of learning. But you come back, Day Two, and a lot of stuff starts clicking and you start playing a lot faster. That just makes it more enjoyable."

yea reading up on the rookies has got my interest still would like to see when the Steelers in their dime package all the DBs have fluid ability to change directions at top speed with good hands. with a better pass rush need to make this defense a turnover machine. Minicamp 184121345

I saw where Artie Burns said they will be playing a lot more man coverage this year and based on who we're signing it makes sense. We improved last year and I think we do this year to the point of being dominant if we stay healthy.

I predict 13-3.

Sutton showed in Senior Bowl week that he understands Offensive route concepts very well and diagnoses them well, while using that football IQ to react to routes. He undercut a 5 yard out to OJ Howard, because he felt Howard trying to drive him deep, to setup the out. I think once he learns the Steelers coverages and understands where he has safety or LB help in coverage he will make big strides.

The more that Watt can sponge up during OTA and get comfortable, the more we can look forward to him getting some situational pass rush in the first 1/4 of the season instead of the first 1/2.

I want to know more about the big fellas personally. How is Hargrave looking in his 2nd season? What about Tyson Alu-Alu? Don't forget Jerald Hawkins at O Tackle, who could be the future at LT.

I was hoping to hear that our third year rookie Golson was turning heads as well.

Future seems bright but I'm not going to get too excited for OTAs. As TJ Watt already stated, it's just OTAs, and it's entirely different when the pads go on. I look forward to really seeing what they're made of when they get into pads at Training Camp.

Yes, me too, but its only football in shorts and all the word we get is from reporters and bloggers. I'm hopeful that he will return to form and start to impress in Minicamp again, but stay healthy going forward. Below is a quote from Golson at OTA's

Every day I am working and taking it day-by-day,” said Golson. “I am ready to go. I am ready to get in those pads, start to get some contact, some bruises. I am just ready to go. It’s been too long for me. I am ready to make some tackles.

“I am just ready to go.”
