| With almost $15 million in salary cap space currently available, the Pittsburgh Steelers appear well placed to extend the contracts of several key players this offseason. However, any decisions the front office makes will be done with an eye to the future and how they fit team finances long term.
For a franchise that has been through some lean years when it comes to spending power, the 2017 offseason has been the best the Steelers have ever had. Looking ahead to next year, the projections do not look so comfortable. At first glance, a projected figure of $31,937,575 seems likes a huge amount of salary cap space to play with, but closer inspections shows this money is unlikely to go far enough to meet team needs.
