Well this is just great. Hope Samuels can step up but this is not what we need at this time of year. Must win game just got even tougher

I trust Samuels. It's not like we're running the ball a lot anyway. We should be more concerned with his ability to pick up the blitz. I mean Ben threw 45 times last week and about the same the week before. Honestly right now I have little faith in this team. If we score 30 unanswered points in the first half I'll still have doubts we can hold on.

are the Steelers in the middle of a 4 game losing streak? I hope not.

It's a game on the road, against a team we should win against, with the season as close as you can be to on the line.
Classic game where we lose.
As for Conner, it is a loss. It should not be insurmountable though. Let's see what Samuels brings to the table.

It looks like they are planning to rely both on Ridley and Samuels at least according to this Pitts Post Gazette article:
Quote :
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said running back James Conner has a sprained ankle that is a “little bit more significant than we originally thought,” meaning he is likely to miss at least the next two games.
Because of Conner’s injury, the Steelers have activated running back Trey Edmunds from the practice squad “to provide some running back depth,” Tomlin said. Edmunds is the brother of the Steelers’ No. 1 pick, Terrell Edmunds.
To make room for Edmunds, wide receiver Justin Hunter (shoulder) was placed on injured reserve. Hunter was injured on a play when he was wide open and overthrown in the end zone against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Inside linebacker Matthew Thomas, who was released Friday, was signed to the practice squad.
Tomlin said the Steelers will rely on veteran Stevan Ridley and rookie Jaylen Samuels while Conner is out.
“We got a great deal of confidence in Ridley and a great deal of confidence in Jaylen,” Tomlin said. “Jaylen, of late, has been on the rise.”

I'm with you, ESPN has Oakland #32 in this week's power poll which means there could be cause for concern...

I think these guys win 3 of the next 4. I still have faith that they can pull it together and clean up some of their mistakes. I'm going to force myself to be unrealistically positive damn it.

We've lost the last 3 times we've been there. So what does everyone think about the game against the Patriots*? Or the Saints?
You know what I mean? Right?
The worst thing that could happen is we blow this game and the Ravens beat the Chiefs. If that happens the remaining 3 games really don't matter.
Until we show we can play consistently on both sides of the ball for more than 1 game in a row. Hell as far as I'm concerned we only played 1 complete game this year. We dominated Carolina and that's been it. Until someone can point out another game we played lights out that is my opinion.
If you look at our roster we have plenty of talent to over come our deficiencies but we don't. And lately I don't think it's a coaching issue. It's inconsistent poor performance.

I think this team usually plays it's best when they get backed into a corner, they're backed into the corner pretty good right now. I think they'll actually go in and beat Oakland soundly. Oakland just simply doesn't have the firepower right now to compete. No Kalil Mack, no Amari Cooper. If we lose to Oakland I'll be ready to call this season a bust, but I still have faith.

As long as they treat this game as a must win instead of the one before the Patriots* we should win. This is a game we should win. Period!

Taking on the absolute worse team in the NFL... flashbacks to So many let downs performing at sub .500 teams levels....
Steelers will shoot themselves in both feet and knee cap themselves in this game....

all those loses to sub .500 Raiders teams over the years doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling about this game and the possibility of Gruden having the raiders amp up and out coaching Tomlin. this game is the closest thing to a must win game. Go Steelers, go out lose, play fast, redirect anything the Raiders throw at you.

Oh, I think very much a must win. I really thought they had a chance to turn things around vs. the cheats this year but not as confident without Conners.

Steelers' Jaylen Samuels: I'm ready to prove I'm a RB
With James Conner out, Jaylen Samuels is expected to take over the Pittsburgh Steelers' starting running back duties.
Samuels went to the NFL Scouting Combine as a tight end. At N.C. State, he finished with more receptions (201) than rushes (182). And he never took more than 12 carries in a game during his college career.
Despite the lack of running reps, ahead of Sunday's tilt versus the Oakland Raiders, Samuels said he's ready to show he's a "true running back."
"I definitely imagined it because I knew I wasn't a tight end in the National Football League," Samuels said, via the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "I imagined myself doing what I'm doing."
At 6-foot, 225-pounds, N.C. State coaches defined Samuels as an H-back, per NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein, deploying him in multiple roles, but mostly using him as a pass-catcher.
The Steelers used a fifth-round pick on a player without a defined position, envisioning him as a chess piece that can stress a defense out of the backfield.

Steelers RB James Conner has chance to return for Week 15 showdown vs. Pats*
Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner, who is out Sunday because of an ankle sprain, has a chance to return next week to play the New England Patriots*, a league source told ESPN.
The source added that if the Super Bowl were this week, he believes Conner could have and would have played, giving the Steelers some hope that the NFL's fifth-leading rusher has a reasonable chance to play in next Sunday's big AFC matchup.
Conner suffered the injury during the fourth quarter of last Sunday night's loss to the Chargers. Some sources believe he has a high ankle sprain, though different sprains sideline different players for varying amounts of time.
The Steelers will rely on a combination of Jaylen Samuels, Stevan Ridley and Trey Edmunds, who was signed off the practice squad, at running back on Sunday against the Raiders.

James Conner practices Friday, listed as questionable
Running back James Conner missed last Sunday’s loss to the Raiders with an ankle injury and it looked like he was shaping up to be inactive again this weekend when he sat out of practice on Wednesday and Thursday.
The prospects for Conner’s return are a bit brighter on Friday. He was on the practice field to close out the week of work ahead of Sunday’s game against the Patriots*.
Conner was a limited participant and he’s been listed as questionable for the game. Jaylen Samuels and Stevan Ridley are the other backs for Pittsburgh and the team could certainly use all hands on deck as they try to beat the Patriots* this weekend.

Rogers officially activated and looks like it'll be Samuels and Ridley tomorrow.
Steelers downgrade James Conner to doubtful with ankle injury
Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner has been downgraded to doubtful for Sunday's game against the New England Patriots*, the team announced Saturday.
Conner sprained his ankle on Dec. 2 against the Chargers.
Conner, who missed last week's loss to the Oakland Raiders, practiced on a limited basis for the first time Friday.
He has rushed for 909 yards and 12 touchdowns, the second most in the NFL this season to Todd Gurley's 15.
He has also emerged as a weapon in Pittsburgh's passing game, hauling in 52 receptions -- third most on the team -- for 467 yards.
In Conner's absence, Jaylen Samuels and Stevan Ridley would take over at running back.
The Steelers also activated wide receiver Eli Rogers on Saturday, a source tells ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Rogers, who tore his ACL in the Steelers' playoff loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in January, has been practicing for a few weeks, including some work with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the first-team offense.

Next Man Up!
Samuels showed he can handle the workload. As great as yesterday's victory was, the Steelers have very little time for reflection and have another MUST WIN game this coming Sunday.
This team has shown they can play with the best in the league and win.
They must prove it again this Sunday. No excuses!
Must wine, can no lose!

Samuels had a good game. He showed he can run effectively. Eli coming back was a smart move. Even though I'm pretty sure he ran the wrong route on that second INT he contributed and made a couple nice catches.Washington showed some of what he hoped he could be. Yesterday the "next man up" did their job. We will need that in addition to the first man up doing his job to get to and win in the playoffs.

James Conner's status for Saints game is up in the air
Rookie Jaylen Samuels may have to make his third straight start next Sunday at halfback, and this time do it against the NFL’s best rush defense in New Orleans.
James Conner has missed the past two games with an ankle injury, with his prospects for returning to play against the Saints unknown. Mike Tomlin at his weekly news conference Tuesday said he had just seen Conner at the team’s UPMC Rooney Sports Complex rehabbing his injury.
“Hopefully,” Tomlin said, “that sets the stage for a productive Wednesday, and we’ll go from there.”
Conner practiced only in a limited basis last Friday, and Tomlin initially listed him as questionable to play against New England. However, he downgraded him to doubtful on Saturday, and Conner was inactive for the game.
Samuels responded in a big way. He ran 19 times for 142 yards and caught two passes for another 30 in the Steelers’ 17-10 victory over the Patriots*.
The Patriots*, however, rank 17th in rushing yards allowed and 31st in yards per carry allowed. Not so the Saints, who rank No. 1 in yards and No. 2 in yards per carry allowed.
Tomlin noted that the second ranking is important even if teams may not be running as often against the Saints (12-2) because their opponents have to play catch-up.
On other Steelers injury fronts, Tomlin said rookie safety Terrell Edmunds is in concussion protocol after he showed signs of the injury on Monday; Ben Roethlisberger and his bruised ribs were “no worse for the wear” after playing the Patriots*; Cam Heyward had a hyper-extended knee but returned to the game and should be OK, and linebacker Bud Dupree had a bruised knee “that limited his effectiveness. We’ll let his participation be our guide but fully expect him to” play in New Orleans.
Among other notables from Tomlin’s Tuesday press conference: • Chris Boswell, who sailed one field goal try from 32 yards wide right and connected on a 48-yarder vs. the Patriots*, will remain their kicker. “We’re ready to move forward this week,” Tomlin said.
• He won’t watch the Baltimore Ravens play at the Los Angeles Chargers Saturday night? “I didn’t even know they played Saturday night until you just told me.”

Conner is out this week against the Saints, too.
I personally don't think he'll be back until the playoffs.
