| Steelers sign Pro Bowl WR to 5 year contract - but it's not Wallace - Quote :
- In what has been a long anticipated announcement, the Pittsburgh Steelers have made official that they have come to terms with a Pro Bowl wideout on a new five year deal, reportedly worth $42.5 million. What was not anticipated, however, was the name of that receiver.
That is because the recipient of this lucrative new contract is 3rd year wide receiver Antonio Brown, and not Mike Wallace.
The contract includes an $8.5 million signing bonus with a very cap-friendly base salary of a mere $540,000 for the 2012 season, which could very well leave plenty of meat on the bone for a comparable deal for Wallace, should he decide to make an appearance.
There have been no reports of the team being in negotiations with Brown over the course of this offseason, though with all of the focus being on Wallace, that this went under the radar is not surprising.
Wallace’s decision to not report to training camp no doubt stoked the fire in the negotiations with Brown. Pittsburgh media have been reporting since Wednesday’s camp opening that the team was not aware of the veteran’s intentions and were not pleased with Wallace after his decision became obvious. | |
