The Steelers have hired former Pitt offensive coordinator and Maryland interim head coach Matt Canada as their quarterbacks’ coach for the 2020 season.

Canada began his coaching career at his alma mater Indiana as a graduate assistant in 1994. Starting in 2001, Canada served as either a quarterbacks’ coach or offensive coordinator for seven different colleges through 2018. In 2016, Canada served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks’ coach for the Pitt Panthers. Leaving after one season to take the same job at LSU, Canada and the Tigers mutually parted ways after one season.

Taking on the offensive coordinators job at the University of Maryland, Canada was promoted to interim head coach when head coach D.J. Durkin was put on administrative leave following the death of one of Maryland’s players. Canada went 5-7 as head coach of the Terrapins but was not retained the following year after the school hired a new head coach.

I'm not sure Mason can be elite - not ruling him out yet - but really hope Canada can at least help him get the most out of his abilities.

I really like the hire a lot.

I like this hire with reservation. I have no doubt he'll do a great job as long as he stays with us. I hope he does both a great job and finds a home here as a possible future OC.
