Ward: 'I'm in the right spots'

PITTSBURGH - Hines Ward says his lack of production isn't because he's slowing down in his old age. He says his numbers are down because his quarterback looks elsewhere.

"I'm in the right spots that I need to be," said Ward, 35. "I can't tell someone or dictate where that ball goes. That's out of my control. But I know I'm in the right spots."

"If my number is called, I have to be there and make plays," Ward said. "But it's not about me. You guys (in the media) can make it, ‘Hines is not doing this statistically or whatever.' But the coaching staff and I know that I'm in the right spots that I need to be.

"I've never been a negative person where it's all about me. I'm all about the team first, and if I'm not getting the ball, then I have to do something to help in the run game or (help) other guys get open."

After reading the first few paragraphs, I was thinking, "Oh crap ... here we go!!" I thought he was going to start complaining about not getting the ball. But later comments clarified that he was just defending himself for his "lack of production."

I'm really hoping with the addition of Starks we can get a little more stability from this line and allow Ben and Hines to do what they do best.
