| Subject: Broncos' winning TD play in overtime was drawn up at halftime Fri Jan 13, 2012 1:05 am | |
| The pass play that became the Broncos' winning, 80-yard touchdown on the first play of overtime last weekend against Pittsburgh was a nice element to the Denver game plan.
Only it wasn't part of the game plan, offensive coordinator Mike McCoy said Wednesday. "We drew that up at halftime," he said.
The Broncos liked their chances with physical wide receiver Demaryius Thomas going one-on-one against a cornerback, in this case Ike Taylor, McCoy explained.
"It was one of those deals where we were waiting for the right opportunity," McCoy said. "It's a feel for the game, like you call every other play; you wait for certain situations."
That involved Pittsburgh safeties crowding the "box" and leaving the Steelers' cornerbacks alone in man coverage.
McCoy said he had a chat with Thomas just before the overtime period began.
"I told Demaryius: 'If we win the (coin) toss, this is what we're going to. And if Pittsburgh's defense plays the right coverage (for this play), we could end it (with a touchdown) in a hurry. And if they play a different defense, we'll still have a good play.'

Wait, what? Offensive coordinators can make adjustments to what the defenses are doing? I wonder if Arians knows about this? _________________ If you're going to be a smart ass, you'd better be smart. Otherwise, you're just an ass. | |
