Good listen, SCR! You hit it on the head with the return of Max. He is a definite upgrade over the released J. Scott. The team would like Mike Adams to take over that starting LT role, but they want to push him and make him earn it through hard work. Who is going to push the rookie more to accomplish that goal?
Trai Essex? A guy who has been unable to solidify a regular starting job with us in 8 years. Mild competition at best.
Jonathan Scott? Please. His work since arriving here speaks for itself. There's a reason why he was just released. Adams wouldn't have had to work very hard at all to beat him out.
Bringing back Max Starks makes the most sense in this regard as he is the incumbent starter at the position from last season and has been a starter at LT for us for several years now including during a Super Bowl XLIII victory (not to mention starting at RT in Super Bowl XL). He will be the one to push Adams the hardest and make him the best he can be. Starks will also be a valuable insurance policy in case Adams is not ready for the responsibility of starting and it will allow him to learn and grow into the role at a slower pace if necessary.
Even if Starks ends up being the starter and gets injured again later in the season, it will give Adams more time to adjust to the NFL game and learn his job before being thrust into it which can't hurt. If Adams does in fact win the starting position, then we have a more than capable backup at the T position and a good mentor for Adams. It's a win-win situation.
This doesn't even count the fact that Ben loves Max and it will make him happier having him around and give him a security blanket of sorts.
