The way I see it, you put Greene on a line, and you could make even the average linebacker look like the Greatest player to ever wear cleats. Not saying 70's Steelers LB's were average, because they certainly weren't, i'm just saying they probably wouldn't have been as good without Mean Joe in front.

There's no question that Mean Joe was awesome, but his greatness doesn't take away from Lambert's greatness. That would be like saying, "Sure, Joe Montana was a great quarterback, but that's because he was throwing to Jerry Rice, arguably the best receiver to ever play the game. You could have almost any QB throwing to Rice, and the results would be the same."  ... Of course the results wouldn't be the same. Yes, Rice was one of the greatest ever, but so was Montana. That's why they won Super Bowls. It's no different when we look at Greene and Lambert. They were both great and played a role in winning four Super Bowls. If you take Greene off the team, the Steel Curtain isn't the same. And if you take Lambert off the team, the Steel Curtain isn't the same.

Both Greene and Lambert played a huge role in the success of the Steelers' defense. Asking which one was more important (or better) is like asking if it's better to have a great receiver or a great quarterback. At the end of the day, your chance of success increases if you have both.

If you were to take a poll among all Steelers fans, you'd probably get somewhere in the neighborhood of a 50/50 split in choosing between Greene and Lambert. And neither answer is wrong. The reason I prefer Lambert over Greene has more to do with image and mentality than actual performance (more or less). Lambert is the epitome of the scrappy underdog ... the "experts" said he was too small to play linebacker in the NFL. But he proved all the doubters wrong. And in doing so, he created the blueprint and set the tone for what would become one of the most intimidating defenses in NFL history. And Lambert didn't just intimidate opposing players ... he scared the shit out of them.

As a kid, I became a Steelers fan in the late 70s and early 80s. I have no memories of seeing Greene play. But I sure do have memories of Lambert. At a young age, he left an impression on me that can never be taken away. For me, it's like what former Browns coach Sam Rutigliano once said:
