PITTSBURGH -- Think the Steelers had it rough in Sunday’s opener? Pfft, that was nothing compared to 1989. In the season opener 24 years ago, the Steelers were shellacked 51-0. At home. By then arch-rival Cleveland. They followed up that doozy with a 45-10 loss in Cincinnati. Yoi and double yoi?

Despite the hand-wringing by many in the fan base this week, there’s really no comparison – at least, not yet -- to this year’s team and the one of nearly a quarter century ago.

Craig Wolfley would know. He was an offensive lineman on the ’89 team. He remembers Chuck Noll telling his team that “I just hope we played the best two teams in the NFL.” They hadn’t.

The team the Steelers met in Week 3, the Minnesota Vikings, were the best. Though the 2-0 Vikings had Chris Doleman, Keith Millard and Henry Thomas up front on their defense, the Steelers prevailed 27-14. And they kept on winning, going 8-5 the rest of the way and coming within Mark Stock’s dropped pass of advancing to the AFC Championship.

The lesson?

“It’s not how you start. It’s how you finish,” said Wolfley. “It was a pretty remarkable year.”

There's a difference between being concerned and panicking. It's crazy to panic after one game, or even a couple games. But it's never too early to be concerned. I know a lot of us are concerned, and hopefully the players and coaches are concerned as well (as they appear to be) and get it figured out like the 1989 team did.

Move forward, the past has nothing to offer.
