No, it was an "as is" purchase.  It's up to the buyer to conduct his due diligence.
Maybe Colbert and Tomlin never heard the axiom "buyer beware."

So does this mean his roster spot counts or can they keep Grimble as the 3rd TE until Green is back?

Green does not count against the roster until he is off the PUP list

Those players on regular season PUP must sit out the first six games their team plays. At that point, teams have a five-week window in which to allow the player to begin practicing; from the day the player begins practicing, teams have an additional 21-day window in which to decide whether to activate the player to the 53-man roster. If either of those deadlines pass, the player must remain on the PUP list for the remainder of the season.

My bet is this is going to end up like Pouncey last season

Ed B. is not pleased

Pittsburgh Steelers continue to look for Heath Miller's replacement

by Jim Wexell

Ladarius Green starts on PUP list for Steelers - Page 2 08-30-16green

Ankle, head issues force Ladarius Green off Steelers roster for at least six weeks

PITTSBURGH -- The dreadful Ladarius Green experiment took its next and rather unsurprising turn Tuesday when the Pittsburgh Steelers placed their primary free-agent acquisition of the offseason on the Reserve/PUP list.

Green won't be able to play or practice until after Week 6 of the season.

After Week 6, the Steelers will have a five-week window in which Green can begin practicing. From that first practice day, the team will have an additional 21 days to activate him. If they don't, Green would have to miss the rest of the season.

Green, of course, is the 6-6 tight end whom the Steelers signed away from the San Diego Chargers with a four-year, $20 million contract. He was expected to replace the retired Heath Miller in the starting lineup but has sat out every practice while recovering from post-2015 ankle surgery. He's also struggled through headaches which are feared to be related to concussions suffered while playing with the Chargers.

The Steelers move on at the position with last year's fifth-round draft pick Jesse James, last season's practice-squadder Xavier Grimble, and H-back/fullback David Johnson, the former Steeler who spent two years in San Diego and was re-signed this year.

The three players have played in a combined 66 games (counting playoffs) and caught 33 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns.

In 13 games last season, Green caught 37 passes for 429 yards and four touchdowns.

"These young guys are continually on the rise, in terms of the quality of their play," Mike Tomlin said about James and Grimble. "We’ll expect that maturation process to continue as we get into the regular season. None of us are finished products just because we’re approaching opening day. I’ll expect those guys to continually get better on a day-to-day basis, and even over the course of the journey."

James and Grimble may have played their best football last Friday in New Orleans.

James caught four passes for 25 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger to cap the opening drive. The athletic Grimble caught two passes for 26 yards, including a 22-yarder to highlight a series in which he also drove linebacker James Laurinaitis several yards downfield while leading Le'Veon Bell on an outside counter.

Johnson, who came to camp at 245 pounds and called it "the best shape of my life," also caught two passes (12 yards) last game.

"He’s a pro," Tomlin said of the 29-year-old Johnson. "He’s a detailed guy and we’re glad we got him."

Weird, anyway, like what i've seen from James. I think we have enough to get 2 out of the first three. At that point we get Bell back and we'll be ok.

Steelers go to plan B for tight ends

August 31, 2016
By Gerry Dulac / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

It is not uncommon for coach Mike Tomlin to rest every significant starter for the final preseason game, which is what he intends to do Thursday night in Carolina.

But, while more than half the starting offense and backup DeAngelo Williams will be missing against the Panthers, one significant starter and his backup will be on the field against the defending NFC champions.

In many ways, tight end Jesse James has become a significant starter on offense because, well, it wasn’t exactly what the Steelers were envisioning for the position after Heath Miller retired. And Xavier Grimble, who was viewed as something of a developmental project, is now cast in the role as one of the backups to James.

All this because Ladarius Green, who was signed to a four-year, $20-million contract in free agency, has been placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list and won’t be eligible to return until after six weeks. Green has been out since the start of training camp with concussion-related issues.

With Green gone until at least mid-October, it leaves James, a fifth-round pick from Penn State in 2015, as the new Heath Miller for now and, possibly, even the future.

“That’s how I’m planning to do it — I’m planning to play every snap,” James said before learning Green was placed on the regular-season PUP list. “I don’t know exactly how it works when Ladarius comes back, but that’s how I look at it. I’ll play every snap for now.”

James has looked far more comfortable in his role this year after spending most of last season as the third tight end behind Miller and Matt Spaeth. He is tied for the team lead and is sixth among all NFL tight ends with seven catches in three preseason games. What’s more, three of his four catches in the preseason victory last Friday night in New Orleans, including a 5-yard touchdown, came with Ben Roethlisberger in the game.

“It’s a good thing the ball is coming my way,” James said. “Ben had a great tight end here for 10 years. It would be against his nature not to look my way.”

James is 6-foot-7, 261 pounds, but he is not considered the down-the-numbers type of receiver such as Green (6-6, 240), whom the Steelers hoped could help ease the loss of suspended wide receiver Martavis Bryant with his downfield ability. Curiously, the more athletic tight end on the roster is Grimble (6-4, 261), who spent most of last season on the practice squad.

After seemingly dropping more passes than he caught all of training camp, Grimble finally showed some of his ability against the Saints with two catches, including a 22-yard catch and run to set up the third touchdown. Grimble also stood out with several key blocks in the run game. The Steelers, however, likely will use veteran David Johnson as the second tight end in most run situations.

I liked how Grimble played last game. All we hear is he isn't that good of a blocker, but he had some nice blocks and a couple good catches in the seam. I hope he gets to the 53 and gets some confidence while Green is out. Think he has more upside than James does.

Art Rooney II On Steelers TE Ladarius Green: ‘Things Have Evolved That We Didn’t Expect’

When the Pittsburgh Steelers signed tight end Ladarius Green to a four-year, $20 million free agent contract back in March they did so with the assumption that he and his surgically repaired ankle would be ready to play come the start of the 2016 regular season. Those assumptions have now turned to disappointments as Green will now start the 2016 regular season on the team’s Reserve/PUP list and presumably not because of his ankle, but instead, because of recurring headaches that he’s reportedly been experiencing due to previous concussions he has suffered...

Yeah but six weeks is a long time. Just hope that he can come off it earlier.

Looking at the brighter side of things, he'll have fresh legs coming in. Could be hugely beneficial to us, and it'll likely take some heat off guys like Brown.

If Steelers go into week seven at 5-1, Steelers could be set to mow everyone down after that. Main core must stay healthy the whole year.

Steelers notebook: Ladarius Green optimistic for a Week 7 return

September 19, 2016
By Ray Fittipaldo / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

With Jesse James and Xavier Grimble catching touchdown passes Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, the absence of Ladarius Green is not a pressing matter at the moment. But Green said Monday he is optimistic he’ll be able to play against the New England Patriots* Oct. 23.

Green, who has dealt with an ankle injury and headaches since he signed a four-year, $20 million free-agent contract with the Steelers in March, was placed on the physically unable to perform list before the season started and must sit out the first six games. The Patriots* game is the first game he would be eligible to play.

“It’s a good possibility,” Green said in the locker room Monday afternoon. “We’ll see. I don’t want to jinx it, but the rehab is going good. My ankle feels good running.”

Even if Green is activated to the active roster after six weeks, it might be a stretch for him to play against the Patriots*. He hasn’t practiced with the Steelers and won’t be allowed to practice until Oct. 17, the day after the Steelers visit the Miami Dolphins.

The more likely scenario would be for Green to return to practice if he is deemed healthy and then have the coaches determine his game availability on a week-to-week basis.

LADARIUS, FINALLY?

Injured tight end Ladarius Green told a reporter Monday that he could return for the Oct. 23 Steelers game against the Patriots*. That meshes with word that Green's private workouts have been outstanding.

But is Oct. 23 realistic? Green must remain on the PUP list for six weeks, so the first day Green is eligible for activation is Oct. 17.

On Oct. 17, the Steelers would have five weeks to decide whether to activate him and allow him to practice. If they activate him, they have 21 days to decide whether to add him to the 53-man roster. If either deadline passes, Green must remain on the PUP list the rest of the year.

If Green's activated Oct. 17, a practice on Oct. 19 would be his very first with the Steelers. He didn't even practice with them in the spring.

If the tight ends continue to play as well as they have the first two games, the Steelers can take their time with Green, a 6-6 seam-stretcher.

In two games, Jesse James is third on the team with eight receptions (60 yards) and Xavier Grimble has two catches for 26 yards. Both have scored touchdowns.

How's their blocking?

"Both have been above the line," Tomlin said. "But they've gotten quality assistance from David Johnson ... specifically in the run game."

We're talking about practice, not a game, not a game, not a game, we talking about practice. Not a game. Not, not … Not the game that Ladarius Green goes out there and die for and play every game like it's his last. Not the game, but we're talking about practice, man.

Green isn't the baller that AI was, so cant make the true rant. In comparison Green is kind of like Greg Oden ranting on practice,... love the reference though.

Seriously, when Green is activated, who gets released? Grimble wont clear the waiver wire, but are they really going to keep 4 TE's?

They could drop Matt Feiler if Wallace is healthy. Release/resign to practice squad.

Also consider Shabazz was called up, but I think he's permanently taking Golson's spot.
