PostSubject: Gameballs/Goats   Gameballs/Goats EmptyMon Oct 03, 2016 9:32 am

I guess we need to make some "special" game balls to give out this week.

This looked like a complete team effort.

Question is: Is this the real Steelers? If so look out!

My goat goes to the back judge for the penalty on AB. I've seen a lot more players imitating him that aren't drawing a foul. That one last night was no big deal but yet he got flagged. B.S.!!

I have to say I wasn't real convinced that Dangerfield could play at this level but he held his own last night.
Hell of a pass break up by the other AB (Artie Burns).

How about Vince Williams running people down from behind and Timmons looked a little faster too.

B.J. Finney's Dad (passed away before he was drafted) was a diehard Steeler fan. I bet he was smiling down on his boy last night.

Tuitt and Heyward could still get double digit sacks if they play like that.

This just in:Jarvus Jones can catch. Who knew?

All in all it was a really fun game to watch.

Just too many guys to credit offensively, but I'm biased that it started up front with the O line. Villanueva and Finney are arguably the weak links, but they played great. That gave Ben time to put up great passing day and Bell and D will to get rushing yardage.

Defensively, it too started up front with Heyward and Tuitt in both the run and pass. Props to V. Williams and Dangerfield for being next man up and I thought Cockrell and Gay did well on the back end.

Jarvis Jones with the INT?? What a ballhawk. :)

For as much as the D stepped up, made great plays and pass breakups, the oline playing great, there's only one game ball in my book and that's 7.

When you throw 5TD passes and complete 81% it's hard to pick someone else.

Great team effort all around, but some guys had special efforts:

Gameballs:

Ben - 5 TDs and seems to have gotten back on track. Just to be picky, he was under-throwing some of those longer passes. The first play to Coates should have been a TD, but Coates had to wait for the ball. The long TD to AB was closer than it needed to be because AB had to wait for the ball.  But enough of the pickiness because 5 TD, 0 Ints on a raining night is awesome.

Vince Williams - Last week I named him, along with a handful of other replacements, for not being starters and looking like replacements. What a performance by Williams last night.

BJ Finney - What a tough-guy. He made some very strong blocks against some very big, strong defensive linemen. I wondered why he was starting over Hubbard, but understand the coaches decision after seeing him play with some pretty good aggression.

Goats:

DeCastro - He still struggled at times last night. Two weeks in a row that he just doesn't seem to be that dominant guy in the middle. In fairness, he's played against very good defenders. But he just signed a huge contract and needs to man up against great players.

Jarvis Jones - Dude, you got the ball in your hands and the only guy looking to hit you is their QB. That was your chance to finally hit the opposing QB! Truck his ass, man! O.k. kidding with calling him a goat as I thought he played o.k. Although he got beat on the inside during the goal-line stance by the 3rd string TE. But that pass from Smith sucked (high and behind with a wet ball) and bailed Jones out.

Special note: I really thought Artie Burns fought hard. His pass defense on that deep throw was really fun to watch as I'm not sure there was a starter last year that could have made that play. He also contested 2 other passes that I really couldn't believe the receiver held onto the ball. FYI ... Artie Burns leads the team with 4 passes defended this season. He still has moments every game that reminds you that he's still a rookie, but his potential is also on display.

Burns reminds me often that he is still a rookie, but he is active and battles and apparently is working his ass off in practice to improve. Arrow pointing up for sure. Lets face it, that pass breakup was underthrown and he was lucky is wasn't more underthrown (he would have got the PI for not looking back) or less underthrown(because it was a TD). Burns is near the football, but just out of its reach and when he gets better in his technique, he will start getting his hands on it.

Your assessment of #95 is a bit harsh (I know, from me....really?) I think. He is who we see he is and he caught a tipped up pass. Agreed, if he was as great an athlete as Bucky Brooks evaluated him as, then its likely a pick 6, but JJ is a plodder and I'm just happy he didn't drop the football.

Dangerfield might have just made Shamarko expendible in 2017. Hope to see more of him and maybe he becomes an Ainsley Battles type of find from the practice squad.

I think shamarko still makes the team, someone has to replace ross ventrone as our ST ace. I think he can find a home that way

still a shame about thomas though, the guy is as physically gifted as anyone i've seen, he just is too stupid to grasp the defense though

Will the real Pittsburgh Steelers please stand up?

Game ball goes to the coaching staff. I thought the "Redemption Sunday" was a little corny but I think it set the tone for this team as they came out of the kitchen on fire. The question is: who was holding the match? Was it the coaching staff? The players? A group of players or one individual?

Great team win. Now let's not see a slump next week.

You think they offer Shamarko a contract making $800k a year to play special teams next season??

IDK, Mitchell is 29 and set to make $5million next season and all they have on the roster with upside is Davis at safety. I bet they look at another guy in the 4th or later that can play ST on rookie salary and has possible upside to play safety. 2017 should be time to move on from draft busts of Thomas and Jones, and rather bring in some guys with upside.

If the NFL wants to have that standard, then they need to turn away money from companies like Viagra and Cialis. Nothing like watching a game with your young children, and suddenly there's a commercial mentioning having an erection that lasts longer than four hours. At least the NFL's hypocrisy is consistent. They're against something, unless they can profit from it. Then it's OK.

Picture this....father and 9 year old son watching the Steelers on a Sunday afternoon....break in the game.....commercial for Viagra......always with a very hot and willing woman......and the son asks, "Daddy, what's an erection....Dad then proceeds to spit up his nachos.

I'm guessing Dads have gotten really good at hitting "last channel" on the remote when these commercials come on.

Hard not to give it to Ben who threw 5 TDs....but for me, I personally enjoyed seeing the defense playing with passion and sound tackling more....

Cam made some key plays that stopped the Chiefs before they could get going....and then everybody else just started jumping in and it was a thing a beauty.

Big shout out to the backups for bringing the intensity and focus needed to make last night a W....and with even more starters going down, we're going to need more of it to get through this stack of injuries.

Fantastic response to last weeks cluster****.

I'm going to go outside the box on this one with the game balls and goats.

Game balls:

  • B.J. Finney. Great game coming in for injury. Not only did he do well, he was the lineman that was opening holes for Bell on a lot of runs.
  • Jordan Dangerfield. First start. Looked very comfortable in there and made some nice plays.
  • X. Grimble. Looking very good and a lot of the media talk is how his route running is improving and could be a legitimate threat as the season continues.

Goats:

  • Antonio Brown for the 15 yard unsportsmanlike.
  • Tomlin. Starters should have been out sooner.
  • OLB position. When Harrison is in and looking better than everyone else at the position...yeesh.

I think he's now this year's James Harrison. If he does nothing but hand the ball to the Ref he will probably still draw a flag.

Well, I don't need to picture that scenario. It happened to me 2 years ago when my, then 8 year old, son and I were watching a football game and he asked how medicine helps the man get his truck out of the mud. When I told him the medicine wasn't for the man's truck problems, he wanted to know how Viagra helped the man. Once he was repeating the name of the drug, I knew it was just a matter of time that the older boys at school would explain this to him using their own logic. So I reminded him what happens with his parts when he first wakes up in the morning, then told him that isn't happening for the man with the truck in the mud. Of course he thought that was the funniest thing he ever heard, but stopped laughing suddenly and asked "Wait, will that happen to me too?". I told him no and he then wanted to know how I knew that for certain. I let him know his great grandfather didn't need it, his grandfather didn't need it and his dad didn't need it (knock on wood, I'll follow the trend Embarassed ). I also let him know this wasn't something he's supposed to talk about because it's a private matter and a topic dealing with parts we don't discuss in public. He pointed out that it shouldn't be on t.v. and I agreed, but let him know that was the best way the company that makes that medicine could get people to know about it.

Flash forward to last year and the same scenario with my son, then 9, and I were watching the playoffs. Another Viagra commercial comes on. My son tells me he thinks that commercial is inappropriate and shouldn't be on t.v.. When I asked why, he said ladies shouldn't be laying on a bed discussing problems dealing with mens' private parts.

The world's going to hell in a handbasket No

Game ball: Bell, the offense is so much better when he's playing. The D has to account for him in pass plays too, and his pass blocking is good also. I'm sure Ben's QB rating is much better when bell is in there.

Special mention to better tackling on D (Williams and dangerfield)

Goats: none

Gameballs:
Ben
AB
O-line
Bell
Williams
Wheaton
Defense

Goats:
Fans - there were way too many seats left open (which I'm guessing is due to the rain). Then at halftime even more seats were empty. While I could understand the Chiefs fans leaving at halftime, I don't understand Steelers fans not showing up/leaving, especially considering the price of tickets these days.
