The Steelers have been negotiating with the agent for safety Troy Polamalu over the past several days, an 11th-hour attempt to sign the NFL defensive player of the year before the season begins Sunday.

Polamalu is entering the final season of his contract, and their previous discussions this summer with agent Marvin Demoff went nowhere and stalled. After the Steelers signed linebacker Lawrence Timmons to a six-year, $50 million contract two weeks ago, they decided they could do no more extensions until after the season.

Last week, however, team president Art Rooney had a change of heart and decided to give it one last shot.

Troy Polamalu Contract Talks Kept Quiet

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu says he feels as good as ever; he's just not saying much about his future with the defending AFC champions.

Polamalu said Wednesday contract talks with the Steelers are between his agent, Marvin Demoff, and the team. The 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year is in the final season of a five-year deal that will pay him about $6.4 million this season.

The perennial Pro Bowler has said his preference is to remain with the Steelers, but limited salary cap space could be an obstacle to getting a deal done before the season.

Steelers, Polamalu committed to finishing extension

The Steelers and representatives for safety Troy Polamalu are working hard to beat the team’s deadline to complete a contract extension.

Both sides have been committed to trying to get a deal done for the four-time All-Pro, who has one year and $6.4 million left on his current contract.

Polamalu would be the third top Steelers defender to receive a big deal this offseason — behind LBs LaMarr Woodley and Lawrence Timmons — and the organization has a longstanding, team-imposed cutoff of the start of the regular season in which to have contracts done.

However, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, if a deal isn’t struck by Sunday, the sides have made enough progress that talks would resume after the season. They could be wrapped up well before the start of the 2012 league year, when Polamalu is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but if a deal gets done, I hope they don't overpay for Troy. I'd want to wait and see how he holds up this year. If he stays injury free, then lock him up and pay him. But if he is hampered by injuries again this season, is it wise to invest a lot of money in him? I don't even like thinking about this. My two favorite Steelers (Hines and Troy) are nearing the end of their careers. Negotiations with Troy Polamalu ongoing 3201610882
