The Steelers have received permission from the Washington Redskins to interview their special teams coach, Danny Smith, a Pittsburgh native.
Smith, 59, has coached the Redskins special teams since 2004.
The Steelers have openings for one or two special teams coaches because Mike Tomlin fired Al Everest in the preseason and his assistant, Amos Jones, has accepted a job to become the special teams coach for the Arizona Cardinals.

Chastising the NFL Players Association for standing in the way of testing for human growth hormone, two members of Congress told union head DeMaurice Smith in a letter sent Monday that they might ask players to testify before their committee. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman Darrell Issa, a California Republican, and ranking Democrat Elijah Cummings of Maryland asked Smith to turn over documents connected to HGH negotiations between the NFL and the NFLPA. "We are disappointed with the NFLPA's remarkable recalcitrance, which has prevented meaningful progress on this issue," the letter said. ... Commissioner Roger Goodell said in an interview that he thought the Pro Bowl game, dominated by the NFC, 62-35, improved from last year, when players were clearly not trying and were booed by fans in Hawaii. Goodell said he appreciates the commitment from players to make the game better. He also said he plans to get detailed input and comments about the game from players over the next few weeks.
