- Steelers notebook: Baron Batch showing off physicality
By Mark Kaboly Published: Friday, August 3, 2012, 9:16 p.m.
• At 5-foot-10, 210 pounds, Baron Batch isn’t the biggest running back on the Steelers’ roster. But the second-year player out of Texas Tech stood tall during the backs-on-backers drill Friday night. Batch won or was even all six times he ran the drill and was physical every time. Batch beat Mortty Ivy, Ryan Baker and smacked the helmet off Adrian Robinson. Also looking good on offense were David Johnson and Jonathan Dwyer. Lawrence Timmons and Chris Carter stood out for the defense.
• Last year’s first-round pick Cam Heyward didn’t have the luxury of going through any offseason programs as a rookie last year because of the lockout. A full offseason worth of OTAs has really benefited the defensive end this year. “It was tough because you really don’t have the time to practice and get to know what’s going on. You get thrown into the fire, but those are the cards you are dealt.” Heyward is rotating between left and right defensive end and will be the main backup to at both positions behind Brett Keisel and Ziggy Hood.
• At times, rookie nose tackle Alameda Ta’amu’s aggressiveness has been questioned. That was evident during a recent practice when a teammate yelled at him after getting stonewalled during a drill by a much smaller lineman. Veteran Casey Hampton said Ta’amu’s aggressiveness will come. “You’re a dog, but you bite as a pup. He has to be consistent,” Hampton said. “There is more than getting in shape. It is something that you have to get accustomed of doing and play hard all the time.” Ta’amu is behind Steve McLendon and Kade Weston on the depth chart.

Quietly have a solid and dominating camp is Cam Heyward. If I had to rank DE play so far: Heyward, Bryant, Woods, Keisel, Hood, Blanc
Don't read too much into it. Kaboly posted this shortly afterwards.....

@calmkiller -- nope. Saying that Heyward and Bryant are looking the best. First teamers dont get many reps to be able to stand out
Ah dammit.... he got me. I still think Hood should be sweating. Cam may just sneak up and jack his job from him. _________________ -"I stand corrected... But I absolutely and wholeheartedly fart in the general direction of almost every other thing you have posted to this point."-

| It's so hard to restrain yourself in making judgements when you're desperate for information and all you have to go by are a few people's twitter timelines and a few reports. Just makes me more and more anxious to see them myself in the preseason. BTW, Dale Lolley's take on the same Colon punching incident: - Quote :
- Dale Lolley @dlolleyor
Cam Heyward, Mike Adams fight. Willie Colon breaks it up, then punches Adams himself. Lolley also has an interesting write up on the practice. Anybody that doesn't follow his blog should definitely do so. Among the things he says is that David Johnson showed very well in today's backs on backers, even earning praise from Tomlin after it was over. He also said Baron Batch and Lawrence Timmons showed well. He said that Joey Porter told him he's interested in coaching and that his wife wants to move back to Pittsburgh. He said that Colon got rolled up on and wrapped up for the day after a few more plays. Hopefully he's fine. Then Foster moved over to left guard and DeCastro came in. Regarding the Adams-Heyward scuffle, he said it occurred after Adams pancaked him, which is a good sign. I'm assuming Lolley meant to say that Colon hit Heyward and not Adams though, as Bouchette said, as that would make more sense... Ben and Keisel were given normal days off. Redman didn't participate with a groin injury.

Now will be very surprised if David DeCastro doesn't start opener. He's picking up offense quickly, seems to rarely miss an assignment. _________________ "Either you're playing dumb, or it's not an act". -Judge Judy

That's really good to hear. He SHOULD do better now that he's attending meetings and practicing with the backs. Arians just through him in as fullback last year with little preparation. Reason No. 3,567 to hate Arians. _________________ If you're going to be a smart ass, you'd better be smart. Otherwise, you're just an ass.

| Butler has looked good all training camp punting the ball. Looked pretty accurate at the Friday night practice in the coffin corner drill. More importantly, he has not muffed any holds during FG attempts....none that the Dude saw anyway.
And the Dude has been around lately......man.
For the record, Im not hatin on Kapinos...but if he were unable to perform due to injury, we might luck out a bit w/ Butler

If we can upgrade, then good. _________________ If you're going to be a smart ass, you'd better be smart. Otherwise, you're just an ass.

So, on the #Steelers official depth chart, which Mike Tomlin gives to the PR office to publish, Mike Wallace is listed as starting at wide receiver while James Harrison is not listed as starting at linebacker. Harrison, at least is in camp and has a much better chance to start the opener in Denver than does Wallace. _________________ If you're going to be a smart ass, you'd better be smart. | James C Wexell @jimwexell In 2 min drill, McLendon head up over DeCastro every play, and was blocked every play.
Steelers Depot @Steelersdepot Tunch says DeCastro seems to getting more used to the angles now. #steelers
Steelers Depot @Steelersdepot Tunch saw improvement today alone with DeCastro #steelers

| Hopefully DeCastro can catch on pretty soon if he lets defenders get to Ben Thursday night he will be considered a bust by many. _________________ | |

Unfortunately, you're probably right. But that's just because there's PLENTY of uneducated football fans to buy into it. I'm not worried about Decastro. He'll be fine. _________________ "Either you're playing dumb, or it's not an act". -Judge Judy
