Murphy wont be the #3 QB.  Tomlin said to his agent "he could make some money if he wanted to play WR or DB" according to Mayock in todays broadcast.  That and watch his terrible decision making in the Louisville game and he shows little in the way of QB skills and more in the way of athleticism.

Only thing is that Alex Kozora is just another fan/blogger with a bias against Landry Jones.  If the Steelers keep 2QB's, that is what keeps Jones off the 53.

Agreed. If Boyd or Murphy were pushing for the #3 QB spot, they'd be taking the reps. Instead, Jones is taking the reps with the first stringers, when Ben isn't in.

Landry Jones shows improvement as Steelers No. 3 QB
August 6, 2015 12:00 AM

By Ed Bouchette / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Do not write off quarterback Landry Jones just yet with the Steelers. In fact, you might be able to write him in as the starting quarterback Sunday in Canton, Ohio.

Jones has made the kind of progress over the past several practices in training camp that generally seemed to elude him over his first two seasons with the Steelers. There are enough reasons why the development came slowly, but the most important matter for him and the Steelers is today and, of course, the Hall of Fame Game against the Minnesota Vikings.

“The last couple practices I’ve been having some pretty good days,” Jones acknowledged. “I just have to keep it going and make that kind of what I do, make it consistent.”

Veteran backup Bruce Gradkowski started throwing on the side Wednesday for the first time since the spring, but will remain on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list until they deem his arm healthy. The Steelers described him as having shoulder fatigue, something that also put him on the sideline for most spring practices.

Coach Mike Tomlin has been resting Ben Roethlisberger because with a longer camp and five preseason games, there is no need to press him into early service. That has provided Jones with plenty of work with the first team, and he has taken advantage of it, hitting his receivers in stride, making the right decisions and getting rid of the ball quickly.

“It’s just like trusting the guys to be in the right spots and just going out there and letting ’er rip,’’ Jones said. “It’s just progressing, and the game has slowed down a little bit.”

A big reason might be that he is playing with the big boys, throwing to receivers such as Antonio Brown, Heath Miller, Markus Wheaton and Martavis Bryant rather than third-stringers who came and went.

...So, let’s say the lights have gone on for Jones as he enters his third preseason and that he continues his improvement. Suddenly, instead of competing with Tajh Boyd for the No. 3 job, he could press Gradkowski for No. 2.

Landry Jones looked like he didn't belong on an NFL roster these past couple of preseasons. Hopefully, he will show some kind of improvement this preseason.

QB Jones to get majority of snaps vs. Vikings

By Mark Kaboly
Friday, Aug. 7, 2015

Landry Jones has played in six preseason games in two seasons:

Date Opp. Snaps C-A Yds. TD INT Rating

8/10/13 Giants 15 5-9 48 0 0 70.6

8/19/13 at Redskins 34 9-22 111 1 0 72.3

8/29/13 at Panthers 66 16-35 189 1 3 36.5

8/9/14 at Giants 31 11-21 74 0 0 60.4

8/16/14 Bills 18 2-5 53 0 1 40.0

8/28/14 Panthers 35 14-18 97 0 0 89.1

Total: 57 of 110 for 572 yards, 2 TDs, 4 INTS, 57.8 passer rating

Don't tell Landry Jones preseason games are meaningless.

This one Sunday could end up meaning everything to the former standout college quarterback.

Jones will not only start Sunday's Pro Football Hall of Fame Game against the Vikings, but he will play deep into the second half and possibly the entire game.

It could be the defining moment of Jones' unassuming career. At least that's how quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner is viewing it.

“He has had his moments before, but none more definitive than this in this part of his career,” Fichtner said following practice Friday. “He is getting a whole lot of work with (first string), the (second string) and now is the time to let this all come together.”

The Steelers are trying to decipher if Jones could be trusted to be Ben Roethlisberger's long-term backup.

Bruce Gradkowski, 32, is in the final year of his contract. Jones has one season left on his rookie contract, but the Steelers could cut ties with the former fourth-round pick before that.

HoF Game Huge For Steelers QB

Aug 07, 2015
Jim Wexell
Publisher SteelCityInsider.net

Mike Tomlin and the rest of Steelers Nation are ready for Landry Jones to finally show something at the start of his third season.

It's only the Hall of Fame game, but it may as well be the Super Bowl for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Landry Jones.

Mike Tomlin called it a "significant game" for Jones, a third-year player who has yet to appear in an NFL contest.

With Ben Roethlisberger sitting this one out, and backup quarterback Bruce Gradkowski sidelined with a "dead arm," Tomlin said Jones will play a lot, maybe the entire game against the Minnesota Vikings.

"We don't have a pre-determined snap count," said Tomlin. "We're going to let him play until we've seen enough and then maybe give somebody else some work. He could play the entire game. He could play a majority of the game. Our intention is to get a good look at him."
The former fourth-round draft pick has yet to impress the Steelers through two preseasons, but he's coming off his best week of practice yet.

"His performance has been on a steady incline out there, but that's out there," Tomlin said of the St. Vincent College practice field. "We prepare and play out there for what transpires in stadiums, and I'm excited about watching him play."

Substituting for Jones won't be an easy decision for Tomlin, either. Former Clemson standout Tajh Boyd hasn't been impressive this camp, and the only other options are Tyler Murphy and Devin Gardner, two undrafted rookie free agents who were brought to camp as wide receivers.

Landry Jones definitely didn't impress me at all tonight. It was like torture watching him play. Missing throws all over the field.

i wasn't impressed at all with jones and totally not sold on him making any improvements. the guy still looks like a rookie in his 3rd season. the guy is still putting up tim tebow-like numbers against 3rd stringers playing vanilla defense

if he's starting the 2nd game im not sure if im watching that, watching jones is borderline unbearable

Landry Jones doesn’t do much to earn No. 2 job

Posted by Mike Florio on August 10, 2015

As expected, third-year quarterback Landry Jones threw every pass for the Steelers on Sunday night. It wasn’t a stellar start for the man who’s trying to prove that he can be a competent backup to starter Ben Roethlisbeger.

Jones completed 16 of 32 passes for 135 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Jones generated a passer rating of 61.3.

He led the Steelers to only one score in 11 drives, with an impressive 35-yard throw to Shakim Phillips (who made an even more impressive catch, beating first-round cornerback Trae Waynes) fueling a field goal, Pittsburgh’s only points of the night. Jones missed a wide-open Sammie Coates later in the drive, for what could have been a touchdown.

I love the Steelers, but preseason football sucks. I can't believe I wasted 3 hours of my life watching that crap. Hope we can get a good kicker before Foxboro game.

if coats had run the proper route and James had not had that drop . Jones would have had 2 touchdown passes. receivers did not help him out in any way last night.

Bingo. Gardner and Coates also dropped what should have been TD passes. Jones played well in the first half, but all the focus is getting placed on his less-than-stellar second half. We can't emphasize the bad and completely ignore the good.

I agree with those that say jones wasn't that bad in the first half. His rookie receivers (including Jesse James) did him no favors. I think overall he played ok in the first half. Maybe if those receivers had caught his passes his confidence would grown and he would had a better second half.

Certainly deserves a chance to prove himself in these upcoming preseason games.

Haley saw positives from Landry Jones

By Ray Fittipaldo / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers managed to score three points in their preseason debut against the Minnesota Vikings Sunday night in the Hall of Fame Game. Third-year quarterback Landry Jones played nearly every snap and posted some very ordinary statistics — a 50 percent completion percentage (16 for 32) and only 135 yards through the air.

But don’t count Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley among those who think Jones had a poor outing.

“I thought the first half he did a lot of good things,” Haley said Tuesday after practice. “We obviously left some points out there. We turned the ball over. It’s the stuff I’ve been harping on that got us last year. C. J. Goodwin’s fumble occurred inside the 35. We gave up a minimum of 3 points there. We missed the stutter-and-go there to Sammy [Coates] that has to be a touchdown. We didn’t run a ball in that we probably should have walked in [a Cameron Stingily carry for no gain], and then we dropped three consecutive balls at the end of the half. That’s another 7 points, and we got none. To me, coming out of that first half with 17 points, you’re feeling pretty good about what you did.”

Thanks for posting this gif Hawaii. If you watch Coats real good, notice how long it takes him to look for the ball after he beats his man. He needs to turn his head immediately to track the ball. IMHO, the throw is spot on where the defender can't make a play on it and only Coats can get to it. If that's AB running the route it's a TD.  Just sayin Is this Landry Jones' Final Season? - Page 4 2087824411

Ha, me too!

However, they don't give you the number of passes thrown. What if he's thrown 600 passes in camp thus far? Those 7 picks then sound pretty good to me. I demand they report the QBR for each practice, year-to-date, and career. Then we can truly go into panic mode over the 3rd string QB's training camp performance. Rolling Eyes

It's funny, and says a lot, that we're talking so much about our third-string quarterback as preseason starts. It means we're in a good place. A few years ago at this time, we were talking about whether the starting quarterback and offensive coordinator could get through an entire season without killing each other.

So you are saying you want to know Landry Jones completion percentage to Steelers Defensive players? I think that is a new Stat that somebody like Football outsiders needs to do.

Steelers notebook: Haley saw positives from Landry Jones

August 12, 2015

Of all those mistakes Haley mentioned, he only pinned one on Jones — the miss to Coates on the stutter-and- go.

And Jones didn’t exactly have a full complement of the team’s top skilled players at his disposal. Receivers Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant and Markus Wheaton and running back Le’Veon Bell did not play.

If there was one criticism of Jones from Sunday, Haley said it was his inability to keep the offense in a flow when some of the reserves were getting most of the snaps after halftime.

“The second half, more guys filtered in it got a little sloppy, and he let it affect him too much,” Haley said. “I was encouraged by the first half.”

the thing that bothered me the most about jones' performance was the delay of game penalties and trouble getting the play in before the playclock was up. that is the kind of stuff that shouldn't happen.

I agree. I can understand maybe 1, MAYBE. But the multiple calls tells me one of two things:
1. The coaches aren't getting the calls in to him on time (highly doubtful) or
2. He doesn't know the playbook well enough (more probable than not)
