That would be correct. Bland, vanilla, and unimaginative. I would give it a pass, as we knew we would be playing the Browns next week, but it is what we've seen all year. Short pass, non-productive runs, and the occasional deeper pass.

This is what the Steelers are on offense. There isn't going to be a massive change next week. We've seen one half of a football game in the past 4 games. The rest has been trash.

those guys suggested that this would have been a good time to show some different shit on tape to force the browns to practice against that, even if they dont do it the next game. Week 17: Steelers @ Browns (free with purchase: 4 quarters of winning mojo!) - Page 4 2087824411

I thought Rudolph played well. His shots downfield were very accurate and aside from the 1 INT (which basically cost the game) his decision making was solid. As I've stated several times in the past few weeks, the receivers were not always running the correct routes. The only reason I'm laying blame on the receivers and not Rudolph is because it's been a trend for a better part of the 2nd half of the year and Ben was frustrated with it. There was one shot of Rudolph yelling at Claypool after an obvious disconnect, then the camera flipped to Claypool shaking his head in disgust. But yes, there were more than a few passes without a receiver in the picture.

I have no clue if the Steelers are looking for Rudolph to be the future starter or a long term backup, but I thought he played on par with most NFL QBs. Maybe the question is: Are the Steelers looking for the next HOF QB or will they be satisfied with Rudolph (assuming he's not HOF material)? They went ~20 years between Bradshaw and Ben and it was painful. But HOF QBs don't grow on trees, just ask the Browns Week 17: Steelers @ Browns (free with purchase: 4 quarters of winning mojo!) - Page 4 1797695198

I would agree, I think he played pretty well.

I don't think he's a franchise QB, but I am starting to think the Steelers intend to roll with him when Ben retires.

This is a good QB year but I don't think the Steelers will go for one early, even if a good one falls in their lap. I think the plan is to go with Rudolph down the road and if they have a sucky year, hope it coincides with a good QB crop. But that's just speculation on my part.

I did think that Rudolph really played on par with what we've seen from Ben in the past 4 weeks. That's not great but its what I saw.

No doubt, both QB's struggle in part, due to WR's who can't run the right route. Team is really missing Daryl Drake.

Last observation: Fichtner is gone the day, or at least the week, after the season ends.

i said a few days ago i would like to see dobbs get 8-12 snaps doing some wildcat type stuff or gadget stuff...anything different. i see dobbs did get a few snaps , but he just run the same shitty plays ? any designed QB runs ?

Yes, they ran Dobbs basically as a wildcat. I think he ran twice for 20 yards. He was also 4/5 passing for all of 2 yards.  The only issue I have with this is that the Browns get to see Jackson twice a year and Dobbs is not quite a poor man's Jackson. Not sure there's much fooling them with that stuff. I'd be shocked if Dobbs is in pads next week. Not worth an extra O-lineman, or LB suiting up. Also, I'm probably not going to be happy if they pull Ben off the field for a Dobbs wildcat play if the game is close.

I'll say this for the offense ... it was the same we've seen all year, because the Steelers didn't suddenly draw up a new playbook for Rudolph for this one meaningless game. The difference is that Rudolph was hitting the deep throws better than we've seen from Ben. Not sure why it's considered vanilla and boring. Hell, if anything screwed the game it was the trickery with Dobbs. Not that Dobbs wasn't effective, but two drives stalled inside the 25 yard line in the first half because they decided to get tricky. It wasn't so much Dobbs, but when he tried to throw or hand off, the results were pretty poor. Honestly, I think the Steelers determined victory came when they had no major injuries. I think they are happy to be playing the Browns instead of Baltimore next weekend. But, back on topic, Rudolph connected on 5 passes over 26 yards and 3 passes over 41.  He was ~50% on 3rd downs and 2/2 on 4th down and only got sacked once. Connor was just over 4 yards a rush, not Earth shattering, but they didn't have the attempts since they trailed the entire game.

Here's my summary of the game: The Steelers backup QB played well enough to almost lead a group that contained a bunch of 2nd stringers on defense to victory, even though they probably didn't want to win that game ... and in losing, they get a chance to pound the living shit out of the Brownies next week at home.

i dont have a problem if they keep Rudolf as long as they dont get complacent with finding an upgrade. i dont consider 5th round qb's as trying to find an upgrade. they made one serious attempt to replace bradshaw and that was mark malone in 1980. waited 6 years to decide he really sucks and makes a half ass attempt 3rd round pick to replace him with bubby brister in 1986 for a small upgrade. waste 4 more years with Bubby and draft Odonnel with a 3rd and make a slight upgrade to bubby..wait another 5 years to draft kordell in the 2nd in 1995. one can argue if he was an upgrade to Odennell , but at least they used a second. that brings us all the way up to date till 2004 before they made the plunge with another 1st rounder big ben in 2004.
of course there were a few 5th+ round turds sprinkled in and they tried to recycle turds like david woodley , kent graham, tom tomzach and tommy maddox...all to avoid using that first round pick or make a trade.

fortune favors the bold. do you think andy ried regrets trading up 17 spots for maholmes ? they swapped their 1st ,3rd and 2018 1st. , for the best QB in the league.

better upgrade the offensive line, the running game, teach the WRs the playbook, let juju and his inflating ego walk how about a better play caller before you bring in a new QB.

I always thought he had a gun for an arm but he was probably the most immobile QB I've ever seen. He was like a statue back there.

Tommy Gun. 1 year wonder. Week 17: Steelers @ Browns (free with purchase: 4 quarters of winning mojo!) - Page 4 1797695198

I always thought he had a gun for an arm but he was probably the most immobile QB I've ever seen. He was like a statue back there.

l like tommy gun but bill's run run pass offense could of mixed up a little for tommy.

Yeah, I liked the guy, but he could look really bad at times. Wasn't he the QB when the Steelers lost to the Texans when the Texans gained 47 yards on offense? 4 INTs and at least two went to the house. Hopefully Tommy Gun was hung over or something for that game. The thing I liked about the guy was that he was selling insurance or something and jumped into the Steelers QB spot when they needed somebody ... and had some early success. Just imagine what his career could have been had he been draft by a team that provided solid coaching for him to develop at the pro level.

Kordell was tough to watch. He had one really good year and almost took them to the SB. Sadly, I always thought Kordell would have been the best WR in the league and a good Slash player for a change of pace ... if he didn't push to be a QB. He was a fabulous athlete and an o.k. QB.
