The news that Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler declined to interview for the job as defensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts after meeting with Art Rooney and Mike Tomlin could be taken several ways.
* He received a substantial pay raise. * He received a substantial pay raise and a reiteration of the firm promise he’d replace Dick LeBeau when LeBeau retires. * He received a substantial pay raise, the firm promise he’d replace LeBeau and a specific date when LeBeau would retire.
My guess is the Steelers gave Butler a date when he’ll be their defensive coordinator and it will be 2013 -- 2014 at the latest.
Butler is 55. It’s not likely a coach as highly regarded as he is would be willing to wait forever to become a coordinator. Indianapolis, a potentially career-wrecking job, might not have been the ideal destination. But he’s not going to wait much longer. It’s hard to imagine he didn’t get more than a firm promise.
There has been criticism of LeBeau this season, which is a bit difficult to understand. The Steelers led the league in fewest yards and fewest points. It’s hard to do much better than that.

| I think it's no secret that LeBeau will be retiring and I would imagine the promise of filling that rule would be enough to stay. _________________ | |
