| Steelers place rookie David DeCastro on IR; Designated for Return list (Read More) - Quote :
- In a long-anticipated move, the Pittsburgh Steelers have elected today to place rookie guard David DeCastro on the Injured Reserve list under the newly-minted “Designated for Return” classification. The first round pick injured his knee in the third preseason game against the Buffalo Bills and was scheduled to begin the regular season as the Steelers’ right guard, where he played in college at Stanford, protecting first overall draft pick Andrew Luck.
The young lineman sustained a torn medial collateral ligament, a dislocated knee cap, and undisclosed damage to the patellar tendon in his right knee. He underwent successful surgery on August 29th, and various prognoses for his recovery place a reasonable window of return at around 10 weeks.
Under the new Injured Reserve rule change—which was approved by the National Football League Players’ Association just over a week ago—a player placed on Injured Reserve designated for return will be able to return to practice with the team after six weeks, and will be able to return to play after eight weeks.
However, he is not required to be activated from the injured reserve list after the eighth week; he may remain on the list as long as is necessary. | |
