Wexell doesn't believe Todman will get cut, He's pretty reliable so either Archer or Nix seems most likely.


Caushaud Lyons is an option also. But Imo it'll depend on Coach Mitchell.

It Does Not Look Good for Dri Archer

Good morning,

Someone must go as Le’Veon Bell returns to the team. That does not have to happen today because they will not practice and Bell has been allowed to attend meetings and anything else that does not involve him being on the field with his teammates.

So, the Steelers could actually wait until Wednesday to release someone. However, why wait? They probably know who it will be anyway and it looks dire for Dri Archer. He did not play a snap on offense Sunday against San Francisco after playing just three in the opener against New England without a stat.

Even halfback Jordan Todman, picked up just before the season began, got into the game and had one carry for 11 yards. The fact they put Todman in and not Archer is meaningful. Archer was the deep man on kickoff returns but all four of the 49ers kickoffs went through the end zone. Archer has returned one kick in two games.

Todman can return kicks. Markus Wheaton can return kicks. It does not look good for Archer, a failed third-round draft choice last season and the second small back (5-8, 175) who has not been able to cut it in the past several years. The other was Chris Rainey, a fifth-round choice in 2012.

Maybe it’s time they stop trying to find that little guy to use on offense and go with the studs who actually produce. Archer had 10 carries for 40 yards as a rookie and one in the playoff against Baltimore for minus-one. He caught seven passes for 23 yards and three more in the playoff for 15. He returned nine kickoffs for an average of 17.9 yards and lost that job by midseason. They also were not confident enough in him to have him return punts, although he did return one for two yards as a rookie.

There are other places where they could cut someone to make room for Bell, including a defensive lineman, but they have shown they have little use for Archer, so why keep him?

I have no problem with Archer being let go. He has done nothing to this point, and really hasn't even shown that he could develop into more. He's a special team specialist that has sucked at special teams and hasn't played any meaningful snaps since he got here. He has been a big swing and a miss.

I guess we'll find out soon.

I wont miss him, if you can't run behind this line you cant run anywhere.

If he wasn't a third round pick he would have been gone already.
He contributes nothing to the team.

Tyler Murphy was cut so Archer's spot is safe for now.

Do we even consider Archer an experiment anymore? I had some high hopes for him but at this point is he doing anything but taking up a roster spot?

Gerry Dulac: I wouldn't be shocked, let's put it that way. And if it isn't today, it could be in 2 more weeks when Martavis Bryant comes back. What I think the Steelers will try to do first is trade him to get one of the those two draft picks from 2016 they traded away to get Brandon Boykin and Josh Scobee. Believe me, they are going to try to get those picks back and there are very few guys they would be willing to trade who have enough cache to get a fifth or sixth round pick in return. Archer could be one.

A 2017 7th round pick & Archer for Leger Douzable would be a solid trade.

I expect him to catch or watch a few deep kicks that result in touchbacks.
If he does that, he's had a good game.

Hope is a good thing.
You gotta admit, he is getting better at catching the kickoffs that result in touchbacks.  
The skill he displays in this area is definitely above the line.

I think this was his best game, but honestly is it worth to keep a guy who can you give 5-10 yards net per KR at best and can't do anything else?

archer did have a few decent returns in the last couple games.

I noticed he has improved a little bit, hes just so fast.He needs to find a way to break tackles or juke by people still.

I'd like to see him bust one for a TD and earn his check like Landry Jones did last week.
