3 Potential Replacements For Martavis Bryant: Hines Ward???!!!

Now that we know Martavis Bryant is suspended for the entire 2016 season, the Steelers will have to find a way to replace the wide receiver’s production on the field.

As discussed in last week’s podcast, I surmise there are 3 potential replacements for Martavis Bryant.

That should be easier than what most people may realize.

I will preface this article by saying, yes, Martavis Bryant is a special player with unique skills. He’s a big body, fast, and has the ability to get open. Those are rough intangibles for other players to match, and a reason Bryant became a starter.

But like players before him (such as Santonio Holmes, Mike Wallace, Emmanuel Sanders and even Jerricho Cotchery) the Steelers have always found a way to fill in the gap left by the previous player.

Much of that can be attributed to several constants: a good front office, great coaching and a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Ben Roethlisberger.

That’s why I feel the Steelers will weather the storm in Bryant’s absence. Here are 3 players who could, theoretically, fill the hole left by Martavis.

I think Coats is going to do well this season. He has all of the ability, but needs to show the football knowledge to succeed (get Ben comfortable with him).

Two names that need to go on the list are:

• Ladarius Green: Even in his last few seasons, the Steelers were splitting Heath out on certain passing situations. So expect to see Green split out and playing more like a very large WR. I really like this guy. He has the potential to have an explosive year, because his abilities should mesh very well with how Ben plays.
  
• Lev Bell: Bell also would line up wide on certain pass plays. He's dangerous coming out of the backfield as the checkdown receiver, but he's also shown several times that he's a threat running routes as a primary receiver catching passes down field.
  

IMO Bryant's production will be made up by the rest of the team. No one or two players are going to do what we hopped Bryant would do in year 3 of his career. But if Coates or DHB could do that, all the better. However, Tomlin said it plainly enough: "We are going to throw the ball to the open man" and that open man could be any one of several players.

Bryant had Ike hands in a lot of instances last year. I really dont think his production will be hard to find elsewhere if another receiver can catch the balls that Big Ben drops right into the basket everytime.

The slack that needs to be picked up due to the Alien's blunder will be picked up by players already on the roster.

Not sure if I said it in this article or in my podcast, but that's what I said. 2 of the 3 replacements will pick it up. The other was merely responding to a hypothetical media interview Hines Ward made.

If Ben is healthy and plays all 16 games, he will complete around 370-400 passes per season. I honestly don't care who he throws them to. He will have lots of targets to throw at.

I think weathering the storm is a good way to describe the upcoming performance of the receivers. I hope Coates can be a serious deep threat. And that Green can pickup slack in the red zone. Bryant was killer on those screens passes and end arounds. Maybe Coates can do some of that as well since he has size and speed,

As for Hines, yeah, wish he could come back and contribute but 40 is not a kind number for a receiver. A player with the skill set of a John stallworth would be devastating: a deep threat. If Coates can make a few big plays going deep were good.

Yep, he just doesn't know where to draw the line. 2 pelvic thrusts is the limit, but he just has to sneak in the 3rd. What a shame as he's a TD machine
