Report: Ben Roethlisberger has separated shoulder

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has a right separated shoulder, NFL Network's Michael Silver reported.

The signal-caller told reporters Sunday he underwent an MRI but did not know the extent of the injury in his throwing arm. He said he was "sore" but hoped he would not be held out of action.

Roethlisberger sustained the injury on a sack by Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfact in the third quarter of Saturday's 18-16 wild-card win. He left the game but returned in the final minutes for the Steelers' game-winning drive.

Backup Landry Jones stepped in for Roethlisberger after the injury. He completed two of five passes for 11 yards and an interception.

The Steelers play next Sunday at the Denver Broncos in the AFC divisional round.

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict knocked the Steelers’ two biggest offensive stars out of the game before he helped send them into the next round of the AFC playoffs.

But both of those players — quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown — have a chance to be ready Sunday for a divisional-round playoff game at Denver.

Roethlisberger’s injured right shoulder is “sore,” but he said there apparently is no ligament damage and is “day to day” for the top-seeded Broncos.

Speaking briefly as he walked through the locker room Sunday at the Steelers practice facility, Roethlisberger said he had a magnetic resonance imaging exam on his throwing shoulder after he was injured on a sack by Burfict on the final play of the third quarter. Roethlisberger, though, said he was not sure the extent of the injury.

Despite the injury, Roethlisberger returned for the final series and led the Steelers on their improbable winning field-goal drive, completing 5 of 8 passes for 40 yards. Roethlisberger told the coaches he could barely throw the ball longer than 10 yards.

“Coach [Todd Haley] called one deep one in there and, obviously, he had to because time was running out,” Roethlisberger said after the game. “So I went over to the sideline and said, ‘Coach you can’t do that anymore, I can’t throw it that far.’ We knew we had to work our way down the field.”

Also, All-Pro receiver Antonio Brown, who was put in concussion protocol after a hit to the helmet by Burfict following an incomplete pass, is said to be fine and should be able to play against the Broncos.

I'm worried about Ben but it sounds like AB will play. Unbelieveable after the hit he took.

Ben is the toughest SOB in the game, the Steelers need him and he knows it. Day to day is as good of news as we could have hoped for, rest up Ben.

Dont think its separated. From all I've read it looks like a sprain, no damage at all. Both he and AB have a chance to play Sunday

If Ben can play - he'll play.

We could possibly win without AB, but not without Ben.

I've read both AC joint sprain and separated shoulder. Don't know what to believe.

As for AB, although he feels fine, he must be cleared by the independent neurologist. If the neurologist thinks for a second he can't go, he won't play.

If it's a Grade I he will play, which I'm sure it is. If he had a Grade 2 there's no way he would have been able to throw, thats an injury that usually has people out for 4-6 weeks.

Probably won't have any official news until the results from the MRI, but according to steelers depot, ben's already in the film room studying the bengals and not wearing a sling, so he's probably expecting to play from what it sounds like.

I'm still amazed that we beat Arizona w/o Ben and they are better than the Broncos. I'd put the odds at slim not none if Ben can't go. That said, I'd say there's an 80% chance that Ben will play.

I do not bet college - too many teams to track. Even with the best teams the talent across the board obviously is not up to NFL standards and can lead to more random breakdowns on both sides of the ball

5Dimes actually has a line on Denver-Steelers with Denver favored by 6 - no over/under, which is where Ben's ability to throw really has an impact

Sportsbooks that are posting a Steelers/Denver line have Denver favored by 6 to 7 - those with an over/under have 40 to 41, which is very low for a Steelers game this season

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger confirmed during his weekly radio show Tuesday that he has a sprained AC joint and torn ligaments in his throwing shoulder.

Roethlisberger told 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh that his shoulder is "definitely sore" but maintained that his status is still day-to-day as the Steelers prepare for Sunday's AFC divisional round game against the Denver Broncos.

I'm really hoping it's that, and Ben's usual playing up his injuries. There's a lot of information on the net right now that are conflicting, so I don't know what to expect. I guess we will find out more when the team hits the practice field from wed-fri.

Technically any sprain, even a grade I, you can say there were ligament tears. I'm guessing if it were grade II he wouldn't have been able to throw much at all, or even get back in the game. Then again, it's Ben we're talking about so who really knows?

There's conflicting info about brown Williams and Ben, but this came right from the horses mouth. Ben plays well when injured sometimes. I hope we see him on the field.

Ben in the past has played up his injuries to be more severe when they were, and I hope it's the case this time
