how many years is this rebuild going to take?

keep in mind, when they actually looked good last year it was against a series of back up qbs and a peyton manning who cant throw anymore. And manning still was able to hobble down the field and score a game winning TD.

just sayin

guys we have how many first and second round picks on our defense?  cant say the talent potential isn't there and Lebeau and Butler are able to develop talent on defense.  Wade had great success everywhere he coached a defense with less "talent" then he would have had in Pittsburgh.  he was on his couch when we promoted Butler.  We weren't going to be as dominant as Denver was this year but we would have been a lot better than we are or will be under Butler.

and as for the DVOA, Denver was #1 in that improvement.  also, our pathetic pass defense is still that and its not only on them, its on the slow development of our high draft pick LBs and depending on an aged Harrison and journeyman in Moats.

cant do anything now but this is why you cant fall in love with only steelers and sometimes a better option isn't in our building.

Wade Phillips was sitting on the couch because he wasn't looking great in Houston. I'm not going to bash the guy, because I think he's a good coach, but the Steelers have the right guy and you're failing to give them credit for bring in (and retaining) Butler. You make it sound as if he was born a Rooney. He wasn't. He was brought here to coach. And not playing musical chairs is a key factor to the Steelers success ... not by trading personnel on a whim.

And I agree with everyone else here that there is a huge talent difference in what the Broncos had on their defense and what the Steelers had the past few years. Denver brought in plenty of hired guns to win a championship this year. There's a reason they are not favored to win it next year ... those mercenaries are taking their paydays elsewhere. Sorry, but the Steelers are building within because that will result in sustained talent.

In response to your question on how many 1st or 2nd rounders the Steelers have on defense, my response it 1. Mike Mitchell was a 2nd round draft choice and is the only one drafted that high in the Steelers secondary. Give the Steelers those Denver DBs and they would have destroyed every team in the playoffs and Super Bowl. Denver barely made it to the big dance.

here is how the defense we play is supposed to work. We get pressure on the QB so our dbs, who are questionable to begin with, don't get torched. Our 1st round outside rushers have been a non factor in the rush which exposed our secondary as now they have to hold coverage longer and no db can do that, especially with todays rules. we could have Denver's secondary and they would get torched also with our pass rush.

Now, we start getting pressure from the outside, QBs make mistakes. See Super Bowl 50.

Our defense played not to get beat bad as they have their DBs lines up 15 yards off the line of scrimmage.
