PITTSBURGH – Despite all outward appearances, Troy Polamalu and Ryan Clark really aren’t the Felix Unger and Oscar Madison of the Steelers secondary.
There really is nothing odd about this couple, they insist.
“We seem that way but we really aren’t,” said Clark. “The parts of us that people see, they think we’re polar opposites, but it works well. We think alike. We just act differently.”
Clark is the brash – some might say cocky – free safety. Polamalu is the introverted, all-world strong safety. They’ve been partners in the defensive backfield the last seven years, which is about six Kim Kardashian marriages or an eternity in today’s NFL.
It started as a professional relationship that began when Clark signed with the Steelers as a free agent in 2006 and has blossomed into a true friendship over the years.
“I think you see that on Sundays and see the way we’re genuinely happy for each other,” said Clark. “We were brought together by a lot of things but it’s definitely one of the more meaningful relationships in my life.”
It’s a relationship that’s rooted in faith, family and football, according to Clark, and even extends to the players’ families. After practices, it’s not unfamiliar to see the two walking off the field together.
