It's Time for Joey Porter to Shut Up About Jarvis Jones

Jarvis just doesn't have it. I don't know when I've been more disapointed in a first round pick. I had such high hopes for Jarvis. I think it's time for the steelers to move on from him.

Yup, and when I saw his tape I just thought he would be "a good football player". One who got sacks on relentless hustle at Georgia, not a quick first step, nor any hand fighting skill, pass rush moves, etc.

On the scale of Steeler OLB's, he has yet to achieve the level of Carlos Emmons.

Steelers Still Undecided On LB Jarvis Jones’ Fifth-Year Option

The Pittsburgh Steelers have more than month to go before they need to decide whether or not to pick up the fifth-year option on linebacker Jarvis Jones, but as of right now, the organization has not made a decision as to whether or not that will ultimately happen.

“No decision has been made. I think the date is May 4, but no decision has been made,” said Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert on Sunday ahead of the league’s annual meetings getting underway in Boca Raton, Florida, according to Bob Labriola.

Should they ultimately decide to pick Jones’ fifth-year option up, it will likely come with a 2017 salary in excess of $8 million as the amount last year for outside linebackers was $7.8 million. While such an option for Jones would not be fully guaranteed until the start of the 2017 league year, it would be guaranteed if he’s injured prior to then and unable to play next season.

Jones certainly hasn’t lived up to his first-round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft as of yet as he’s only recorded 5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and an interception in the 36 regular-season games that he’s played in so far. Jones, however, did record a key sack and a forced fumble in the Steelers Wild Card playoff win over the Cincinnati Bengals this past season.

Last offseason, the Steelers picked up the fifth-year option on guard David DeCastro on April 9th and in 2014 they picked up the fifth-year option on defensive end Cameron Heyward on April 22nd.

Should the Steelers ultimately decide not to pick up Jones’ fifth-year option, he would become an unrestricted free agent next offseason.

Pro Football Focus, which is in the business of rating players and has as clients many NFL teams, ranked Harrison as the eighth-best 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL last season. Among the Steelers, Moats was next at No. 24. Jones was 30. And of the 53 outside linebackers they ranked, Dupree was No. 53.

Wouldn't you need to do a .25 on the sacks to get a true over/under? Just saying, because I think he could get 5.5 on the dot.

Steelers decline his option because of the need to sign Decastro and Bell to extensions.
He then goes on to have a double digit sack season with I'll say 12.5.

Jarvis Jones' future with the Steelers may come down to this weekend's NFL Draft.

The Steelers have yet to make a decision on whether they will pick up the fifth-year option on Jones' rookie contract and this weekend's draft could influence that decision.

“We won't talk about specific contract-type issues, but I think it is safe to say once we get through the draft, it will affect how we do business with our veteran players from that point forward,” Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said on Monday during a news conference leading up to this week's draft.

The Steelers own the 25th overall pick and an outside linebacker, albeit not an urgent need, could be a possibility for the Steelers within the first three rounds.

Colbert wouldn't got into specifics about Jones — the Steelers' first-round pick in 2013.

“We avoid talking about individual contacts and fifth-year options,” Colbert said.

The rookie wage scale that was a part of the 2011 collective bargaining agreement required all rookies to sign four-year contracts. For players taken in the first round, the team has the option to extend the contract for an extra season, but that decision has to be made by May 2 the year before the final year of the deal.

The Steelers have used the option both times since the new CBA. In 2014, the Steelers picked up Cam Heyward's option and in 2015 they picked up David DeCastro's. In both instances, the Steelers picked up the option well before the deadlines — April 22 for Heyward and April 9 for DeCastro.

That's another strange dealings from this coaching staff. He starts almost every game, but plays the least amount of time.

Dude can't beat out a 38 year Old for playing time...It's time for Colbert to start reevaluating his acumen at that position too...

He is being given the opportunity to succeed, but he doesn't demonstrate that he shouldn't be taken off the field and therefore doesn't stay on as much as the other OLB's.

Classic case of being given the start based upon "potential". I wont be shocked if the Steelers take a pass rusher early in the draft.

Do the steelers get an OLB in round 2? I see that as more pressing than S.

They might, but I think they need a better safety combo than Golden and Mitchell. IMO, should have traded back with Broncos, taken Vonn Bell and banked another pick.

Nah, if that were the case he'd be a perm backup to Harrison. He started 15 games. The coaches aren't sending him in as a starter and watching him fail 15 times. Given that Harrison has waved Jones off the field when he's sent on, I think it's a case of no one is going to tell Deebo he has to come off field.

I think he's a "good" football player. But will he be worth a 1st round pick? Drafting a CB is kinda like the old Forrest Gump saying: "Life's like a box of chocolates, you don't know what you'll get.". Won't know about any of these guys until you see them on Sundays. Hell, I though Justin Gilbert was going to be awesome and he hasn't done squat for a crappy Browns secondary. O.k. that could just be because it's the Browns. But it's not like the Steelers are turning crap into gold either.

Reminds me of the Holliman hype of last year or the Jarvis Jones hype. Fans just look at a couple of pundits quotes and his ACC INT total, or SEC Sack total, but they don't look at his tape to see that the level of play isn't NFL caliber.

Artie Burns has a long way to go before he will compete against NFL WR's IMO. Look for a Keenan Lewis type learning curve, if he ever gets to that level of play.

Are you saying that the Steelers scouts and coaches don't watch tape? Because if they do, they see something that you don't.

The difference between Javis Jones and Burns is that you think you would get a Day 1 starter from Jones. He's supposed to be polished and knew the system better than other rookies because of the defensive scheme he played in college. Turns out he is decent at best. He's by no mean a bust but he's going to the Ziggy Hood path that you feel disappointment because you want more from a first round pick. On the other hand, Burns is supposed to be raw. He just turns 21 and didn't fully focus on football in college. It's unrealistic to think that he could be a immediate contributor. The expectation is totally different.

- I said Tyson Jackson was overrated as a 5 technique and handled by Ole Miss TE's and was overrated--correct
-I said Herman Johnson (mayocks 5th rated OG from LSU) was too big and slow to play guard in the NFL--correct
-I said Jarvis Jones doesn't show the explosiveness to get the edge, but just got sacks on hustle and coverage in the SEC- Correct
-I said Keenan Lewis will be a lockdown corner in the NFL, but he played exclusive man to man at Oregon St and will take time to learn off man--correct
-I said Bruce Davis ran around blockers the long way to get his sacks and would not be able to do that in the NFL--correct

I don't know WTF these scouts watch. Bucky Brooks was a NFL scout and he compared Jarvis Jones get off to Vonn Miller!?!?! I watched the tape and saw a guy with no hand skills, no quick first step, no inside counter move, no actual goto move..... just hustle and effort.

Mike Mayock says Burns has "world class speed" and I see that he couldn't catch PITT KR who ran a 10.8 in highschool 100M and got beat by Nebraska's #3 WR on a go route.

Again, I hope I am wrong like I was with Jackson. Been a Steeler fan for 35 years, but Burns looks like a 3rd round long term project to me. I think Eric Murray from Minnesota who went to KC in the 4th was a better fit for the Steelers.
